Exploitation of Disabilities (Q for Co-Ops)

I went to the DMV yesterday and waited over a half hour until my number was called. About 30 seconds into my transaction with the clerk another clerk walks up with another person. She asked her co-worker, "Can you help him? He went to the wrong counter. He got his ticket number confused, he's your B049 and not my G034". G044 told my clerk, "I'm sorry, I'm disabled. I'm dyslexic and I didn't know".

The clerk helping me sighed and frowned until he told the guy, in a very curt manner, to go have a seat and he'll help him after me. Obviously my number was just called and the issue was that the man with dyslexia needed to be assisted before me. I didn't care either way. I waited long enough that I could wait a couple more minutes.

The clerk then said to me, "I'm sorry but I get so damn sick of people with "disabilities" thinking they can get what they want." I felt a bit awkward 'cause I didn't know what to say. B049 was standing right behind me and the clerk was rude. All I wanted was to renew my registration and get on with my day.

I apologize for the TLDR but I wanted to give the particulars on what happened to help set up my question....Especially since there must be a lot of gray areas with these situation and judgment calls are never easy...

There's many patients out there that exploit their disability for personal gain when interacting with their caregiver. I've never seen anything like that in person, the few scuffles I've seen are always the assholes who demand to be let in when they haven't been verified or don't have a rec.

This question is for the co-ops that have had experiences in which they felt that a patient(s) was exploiting their disability and abusing their services to get preferential treatment. If you have had that experience how did you deal with it? Or more specifically, where do you draw the line? Especially in regards to the concept of being involved in a community that is so closely tied to compassionate care?

The DMV guy seemed to have policy- zero tolerance.

Re: Exploitation of Disabilities (Q for Co-Ops)

We had a patient that tried to exploit his disabilities quite often. Once he tried by asking if his daughter (who is NOT an MMJ patient) could come in and get his medicine for him, since he was too sick to come in himself. I simply answered by first apologizing that I could not comply with his request as it is against the law to do so and that if he was in serious need of medicine perhaps he should check a co-op closer to him (since we are a bit far for him but we do offer discounts to patients with SSDI) or he should get his daughter to drive him over. It is always a difficult call though to make......its crummy to be stuck in that situation

I dont understand....If his daughter was his " designated caregiver " does the law not allow for her to pick up his medicine ??

Wether or not she is a MMJ patient is not an issue. If he has filled out a " caregiver " form, that is enough ( atleast that is my understanding, please correct me if I am wrong ) ??

I think she would have to be a State Issued MMID caregiver, and then everything is good. That or she would need to be a patient herself.

Re: Exploitation of Disabilities (Q for Co-Ops)

This story reminded me of the last time I went to get my rec renewed at green relief in sf.an older man who was very confused didn't fill out the paperwork correctly and the doctor got really mad and started cussing this old guy out.totally uncalled for considering it was an honest mistake.
