Rep Power: 4499 | atty.general petiton on drug offenders has anyone seen this? i was at the store today and was asked to sing it. i quickly looked it over. it said something about low risk drug users not going to jail and the courts not being able to jail probation and perole violators. and it would also change some MARIJUANA LAWS FROM MISDOMINOR DOWN TO INFRACTIONS it did not say what the changes are. anybody know about this? |

Antother good petition Im working on is for renewable energy. The petition about drug offenders is basically more money towards rehab programs and nonviolent drug offenders would get rehab instead of jail. It would also change some marijuana misdemeanors to an infraction. We have prop 36 but we have not even gotten half the money for it so this petition would help change that.It would cost some money to get the rehabs going but we would save more money in the long run because we wouldnt spend so much of are tax dollars on jails. We shouldnt treat drug addicts as criminals. If any of you come across it please sign it. Its just to get it on the California ballot . I like working my own hours by myself as a petitioner even though its only temporary. Last edited by Sir smokes-A-Lot; 03-10-2008 at 09:28 AM.. |

Rep Power: 65776 | Re: atty.general petiton on drug offenders You can find petitioners working on that petition around orange county maybe LA. You can usually find petitioners in front of grocery stores or any busy store. You can find me petitioning it in front of the Trader Joes in Laguna Nigel or the one in Laguna Woods. |

Rep Power: 17 | Re: atty.general petiton on drug offenders Hmm any specific places maybe in OC or LA? I live in San Diego but I go to LA a lot also to co-ops and visit the in laws. Sure wish these petitions could be put in all the co-ops, sure would be easy signatures imo. :slaugh: Maybe you can set that up? Or mail me some petition forms and I will take them to co-ops etc.. Pm me |

Rep Power: 463 | Re: atty.general petiton on drug offenders Here's more info about the initiative: http://www.drugpolicy.org/statebystate/california/nora/ Nonviolent Offender Rehabilitation Act of 2008 (NORA) NORA is a California ballot initiative intended for the Nov. 4, 2008, ballot, offering a common-sense solution to prison overcrowding. The campaign is just getting started, with signature-collection efforts under way in January 2008. We continue gathering signatures until April 21, 2008. The official sponsor of the campaign is the Campaign for Nonviolent Offender Rehabilitation, a state ballot measure committee with ID# 1302707. For more information about how to get involved, please contact Margaret Dooley-Sammuli by email. Additional documents and forms are available here: http://www.drugpolicy.org/statebysta...adownloads.cfm NORA Official Title & Summary On Jan. 2, 2008, NORA supporters received the official title & summary for the ballot measure from the California Attorney General. This is the language that appears on petitions now. Here is the text of the summary, broken out (by the campaign) into bullet points for easier reading: NONVIOLENT OFFENDERS. SENTENCING, PAROLE AND REHABILITATION. STATUTE. * Requires State to expand and increase funding and oversight for individualized treatment and rehabilitation programs for nonviolent drug offenders and parolees. * Reduces criminal consequences of nonviolent drug offenses by mandating three-tiered probation with treatment and by providing for case dismissal and/or sealing of records after probation. Limits court’s authority to incarcerate offenders who violate probation or parole. * Shortens parole for most drug offenses, including sales, and for nonviolent property crimes. * Creates numerous divisions, boards, commissions, and reporting requirements regarding drug treatment and rehabilitation. * Changes certain marijuana misdemeanors to infractions. Summary of estimate by Legislative Analyst and Director of Finance of fiscal impact on state and local government: * Increased state costs that could exceed $1 billion annually primarily for expanding drug treatment and rehabilitation programs for offenders in state prisons, on parole, and in the community. * Savings to the state that could exceed $1 billion annually due primarily to reduced prison and parole operating costs. * Net savings on a one-time basis on capital outlay costs for prison facilities that could exceed $2.5 billion. * Unknown net fiscal effect on expenditures for county operations and capital outlay. |
