U.S. is 15 years behind South Korea in Internet speed

A report on Internet speed in the United States says the country isn’t likely to catch world leader South Korea for 15 years.

Or for much longer — at current growth rates, the United States will only reach South Korea’s speed today in 15 years.

The report, by the Communications Workers of America, details Internet download and upload speeds all over the United States and some of its affiliated territories. In the last year, the average upload speed in the United States “barely changed,” the report said, and download speed only grew a little, from 4.2 megabits per second in 2008 to 5.1 megabits per second in 2009.

In South Korea, average download speed is much faster — 20.4 megabits per second. The United States also lags Japan (15.8 mbps), Sweden (12.8 mbps), the Netherlands (11 mbps) and 24 other countries.

At average U.S. speed it takes about 35 minutes to download 100 family vacation photos, and four hours to upload them.

The report said U.S. speeds aren’t sufficient for the needs of in-home medical monitoring, distance learning programs, or to run a modern business from home.

“People in Japan can upload a high-definition video in 12 minutes, compared to a grueling 2.5 hours” at the average U.S. speed, the report said.

The report calls for more investment in the nation’s Internet infrastructure. It also suggests shifting the outdated universal service payments that support voice telephone service over to pay for better and cheaper high-speed Internet service for everyone.

No one addressed the choices the Koreans or the Japanese have....
I live in So Cal and have had everything starting with the 56k modem at 5.3k ten years ago. Then to Cable at 2mbps... Then DSL at 2.8mbps... Now VIOS at 9.9mbps and higher...
I think that the high speed optical lines are still very limited in those other countries except maybe Japan....
Here,,, Its what you have available and can afford.... This allows access to the Net for most of the population in this country... Can this be said in those other countries as well?

thats because thy can afford it, that country is the size of (hmm what are they a size of?) anyway. i dont think they are spending money of things our government does... in fact i think we give them a few billion a year to buy weapons.. i got comcasts fastest and it works good for me...

South Korea is about the size of Oregon.

1. their geographical footprint is tiny compared to the US, and the population density is orders of magnitude higher
2. those countries broadband is subsidised by the government
3. many in the US won't pay for broadband even if it was available, making blanket coverage not cost effective for private companies to deploy in remote/low density areas

I like my 15Mbps, and could get 50Mbps if I cared to. A huge number of people don't want to spend more than $15-20 a month on internet access so dialup is a bigger market now than it was 5 years ago.

Those Asian countries are incredible with new technology. Just goes to show how dumb us Americans are as a whole. Japan is really good with cars and their technology, China and South Korea are running away with the internet tech. We need to look at them as role models in those aspects.

F--- Fios!!!!!!!!!!! Those assholes put banners all over Santa Monica proclaiming FIOS IS HERE!!! Bullshit! It is in a tiny fraction, and they won't even estimate how soon it will come. They suggested I ask a FIOS worker if I see one in my neighborhood.

Sold me on FIOS only to then say oops not in your area yet. Across the street yes. Then wanted me to be free agent and petition my landlord for them, etc.
I was like, I don't work for your company, what am I the verizon street team?
Still no FIOS. I probably have 200 people up the line on my roadrunner. zzzzzz

LOL Same shit here! They wanted to essentially recruit me to be a FIOS enabler. As soon as the profit share documents are signed by me and FIOS, I am there. Meanwhile I got Time Warner Cable, which headquarters at Dante's fourth ring of Hell.

No FIOS cable laid yet here.
I use DLS Extreme and get a good 5 megs down and 634 up for $32 a month...I've been with them for years. They have higher speeds available but that's as fast as my line will go.

They're located right here in the valley and are great to work with.

I've have had the GM of the company call me many times to help with a problem I was having.

Can't beat that!

LOL, well I called like last Oct, and they said that they just laid the cabling on my street some weeks ago. They have been good to me, and I get 90-95+% of all my speed. Being in the hi desert helps I think, as it's not as crowded as the valley.
