Rep Power: 5262 | Re: new laptop I recently purchased a HP Pavillion dv 9000. I use it for business and personal use. I love it!!! It's a 17" weighs about 7 lbs. It has Vista, the new Windows Media Center, a built in web cam, a tv tuner, and a bunch of other bells and whistles I'm figuring out. I haven't had one problem. After rebates, and checking prices on the net and in stores I got it for around $900.00 and I'm confident I'll love it for many years. I hope that helps, good luck! |

Rep Power: 5 | Re: new laptop It really all depends on what you are going to be using for. If you aren't going to be playing any newer games, doing heavy graphics or video work you really aren't going to need much. Just get a basic Dell or Macbook and you will be plenty happy. However, if you do need a kick ass computer i would try building one yourself. Usually you can get a WAY better computer for the money. Building a laptop is a little harder but still can be done. I have done IT work for pretty much my whole life... any questions please feel free to ask! |

Rep Power: 42799 | I recently got a Compaq Presario CQ60 at Office Max for $469.00. It's a smokin' laptop for everything but demanding video games. I don't play video games so I don't need those types of resources. It's got a built-in video cam, mic, wireless, 15.6" wide screen very high quality screen, altec lansing speakers, 3 gigs of ram, 250 gig hard drive, dvd, Vista Premium 32-bit, intel dual core, it's sturdy and light. I could not find *any* laptop comparable to this for under $599.00, I couldn't find anything for under $599.00 not old and stale that had a video cam and mic built in, which I wanted! I use this laptop mostly for recording guitar tracks and for web surfing. It records guitar tracks glitch free and the sound is incredible, real high definition sound. I'm stoked with this laptop. I bought some Alesis USB near field studio monitors for the ultimate sound, $99.00. The compaq comes with a 1-year warranty and for $99.00, I got a 2-year no hassle repair or exchange policy that includes battery replacement and accidental damage too. I could have bought a much more expensive laptop, but I'd rather have the major features on a desktop and just use the laptop for recording and travel. There's no docking port or video out port at this price point, but I don't need those features, again, this laptop is primarily for recording and surfing the web. I haven't done it yet, but I hear-tell Windows XP Pro runs like lightening on this laptop, and the video card is upgradeable if you know how to do it, you get video out with that card too, you're docked. But, then you're talking about paying $569.00 for the laptop, at that price point, if you spend an extra $31.00, spend $599.00, you get a 17" screen and a better video card with video out, some have docking ports at that price point. Mac is way, way over priced, not at all worth the money for any reason. You can do everything a mac can do on a PC cheaper. Forget the hype about the mac. It's just a preference for a few people who find their identities in the mac culture. I know some good mac people, of course. Nothing wrong with the mac experience if that's what you want. I bought my son another IPod, so...we're not opposed to their products where cost effective as are the the IPods. Definitely watch the sales. You can save hundreds of dollars and get hundreds of dollars in additional features if you shop wisely. If you're spending a thousand or so on a computer, watch out. There's a lot of junk out there for a thousand as compared to what you can get for a thousand... And, don't rely on sales people to help you make a purchase these days, most of them have no real knowledge about computers, they are taught to sell you junk, and they just know how to ring up sales. |

I'd rather spend the extra money on a new guitar, ...an old car, ...clothing, a month's rent, a year's payment on a new car. Homey, it ain't worth it. And, my computer has more RAM nearly the same CPU and a lot bigger hard drive,...for $469.00. I saved $1,531.00 by not getting a macbook. Granted, the macbook has a few more high-end features, but again, you'll get much more computer in a PC for what, less than half of the mac??? Get a mac if you got a few thousand dollars to throw around. Get a windows laptop of you want a laptop and you want to spend $1,531.00 on something else too! I take it you're a mac fan! I like macs too, but they are just way too expensive!

There ain't nothing you can do on a mac that you can't do in windows. There's a lot more to the PC than email, cruising the web, doing bookkeeping, and definitely don't buy any random PC. If you shop wisely...you'll get the equivalent of a $1,999.00 mac book for $469.00...you'll save $1,531.00 and have a bigger screen, larger hard drive, more ram, and many more software packages to choose from. Of course, if you want to be accepted by the design community...you might feel out of place with a screamin' windows laptop that does the same work for over half-as-much-less, but hey...who cares! At the end of the day, you'll have an extra $1,531.00 to toy around with and a windows laptop instead of just...a...mac book. If mac books were cost effective, I'd buy one, for sure, 100%. If a mac book were just slightly better computer at slightly higher price, I'd buy it. But, were' talking a 300% savings by goin' with windows to get the same job done. If I spent $1,999.00 on a windows laptop, I'd have the mother of all laptops...I'd have to spend $4,000.00 on a mac to get the same job done...only a $2,000.00 savings at that price point, but that's still a $2,000.00 savings going windows!

Rep Power: 26606 | Re: new laptop windows is such a clunky and quirky user interface and UGLY. every operation i do on my mac, takes longer to do in windows. plus i don't need to install software to run any printer, camera, scanner or other hardware on my mac. everything is plug and play with NO trouble shooting. not to mention---no viruses or other internet stuff that can cause down time. time saved is $$ in the bank. plus all design support services ---especially printers and most vendors are all on macs as well. any software i need to conduct my business is available for macs. i don't use my computer to play games, so that is a non-issue. i actually use a desktop computer ---MUCH faster processing speed than any lap top (which i need for x-large file sizes), plus i neeed an oversize monitor for print work, especially when working on magazines and product packaging. it's not about being accepted by my peers, it's about industry standards, a higher quality product and user experience. i've been using macs since my IIci ! LOVE LOVE LOVE them. |

...what I tried to do in mac took so much longer than in windows (i know where everything is and get there as fast as the mac interface, but...I like windows better cuz of the mac/pc debate that holds no water). In windows vista, all items I've installed thus far are plug and play...printer, scanner, fax, copier, sound devices, recording devices, guitar multi-effects devices, usb speakers, midi controller -- no additional software necessary!!! I compute a lot. I've had 1 virus attack my computer in the past...15 years. Now, I've got security software that's pre-installed and does the job. wow...you're really stretching this one to the hilt. Between the near zero down-time (99.9999%), the cost savings....$$$$dollars a huge issue. Why pay more when you don't have to??? Anytime I've ever used a mac, for the price, I was always utterly disappointed and laughed when I heard how much was paid...omfg!!! $1999.00 for a mac computer you can get at $469.00 in a PC. NO WAY. Hey, I've got an 1/8th of some mac bud, it's...$240.00 per 1/8th. My designer friends like it. They use it exclusively. ...it cost more for the same amount of THC, but it's mac THC and it's better than the pc bud...yeah, it's got the same THC and it costs more...but...it's a mac and my designer friends use it too, they know what they are talking about. I've used macs and pc's from day one. The PC is more cost effective by, in my case, 300%. I'm okay with that. I saved $1,531.00 and got a windows laptop that does the same job as a $1,999.00 mac book (an intel based pc now). stop, please. the windows computer is more cost effective and works the same. I'm gonna go eat a big mac. clunky...this machine here is anything but clunky. omg. what some people will resort to.

If you are a gamer or work in the boring corporate world, you'll most likely need a PC. If you need a PC don't get a Gateway. Me and at least one other WTer got burned big time by them. |
