Christmas Trees in Outer Space

OK, maybe not really TREES, but the Christmas Tree Cluster is pretty amazing to see....

Known as the Christmas Tree cluster, this colorful collection of stars lies 2,600 light-years from Earth in the constellation of Monoceros, the unicorn.

The cluster was first discovered in the 18th century but was captured anew in this stunning image by by the 2.2-meter Max Planck Society/ESO telescope at La Silla observatory in the Atacama Desert. The telescope was outfitted with a specialized astronomical camera called the Wide Field Imager and a series of filters, and then aimed at the cluster for 10 hours to get the full-color image above.

The swirling gas clouds appear red because of ultraviolet light emanating from the young, hot stars that look like blue ornaments on a Christmas tree. The triangular feature near the bottom of the photo is an area of gas called the Cone Nebula.

The brightest star, at the top of the image, can be seen by the naked eye. The furry texture of the light to its right earned that area the name Fox Fur Nebula.

The whole cluster is in a star-forming molecular cloud, and the area between the brightest star and the tip of the cone is a great place for studying how stars are born.

Damn...I was hoping to see the inside of your space cruiser with some cosmic version of a christmas tree. I guess it's a stretch to think you guys would bother yourselves with a silly little earthly holiday isn't it?

ahhhhh, so sorry. if i showed you the inside of the Saucer, I'd have to wipe your memory... bad thing to do to a Human, especially around the Holidays! But I have a very nice Noble Fir right by the particle accelerator (OK, the fireplace to you...) You should see how lovely Mrs Spacey made it.

So we celebrate all your Earthly Holidays when we're here.... "When on Earth, do as the Earthlings do!" is our motto (except for like starting wars and killing and stuff like that)

thank you for that spaceman. that was informative and timely.

you know, that area between the brightest star and the tip of the cone actually is a great place for studying, and also for just relaxing too. :slaugh:

I agree Oak - I fly there often just to stare and contemplate... and sometimes I play some Pink Floyd on my iPod too.

At this time of year we all need to remember that the message of Christmas is Universal... Peace on Earth (and the rest of the Galaxy) and Goodwill towards Men (and all the other species floating around the Multiverse....)

Merry Christmas to all my Earthling friends....

Thanks Spacey,

I use webshots and have many such photos currently in the program...

I'm an amature-beginning astronomer and have seen the rings around Saturn from my back yard, but I know it can't compare with the views from space...

a few more...

This view is on my PC.

I took a Astronomy class in college here at L.A. Valley College and thought it would be interesting and we could watch that overhead projector they had that shows the solar system.

Well, we used that exactly ONCE!

The class was HARD AS HELL..

My friend Aced it and it and I worked my ass off to pass it.

I remember it as if it was yesterday...

The problem with Astronomy classes is... MATH! nobody realizes ya gotta do some fancy math and there isnt so much looking at the sky.

So I thought I'd just fly out there and get a couple more pics of the cluster for ya... here they are:

LOL... No doubt!

A gold miner that had much difficulty memorizing the different types of rock and what caused "Metamorphosis"...

The odd part was one other student and I skewed the grade curve so badly others dropped the course...

I was in my 30's and the average age in my college course was maybe 18-19.

Funny, my lack of identification skills hasn't harmed my ability to find gold... :slaugh:

Cool!

Ah...

So working in a smoke filled work place does have advantages...

All the benifits yet lacking the expense.

I've been so good that I haven't had any meds since morning coffee, but we did legs today, so standing and walking is a chore... It may be due to fatigue, not intent...

all i've smoked today is half a J of some ChemDawg I've been hoarding. trying to cut down so i don't run out before Tuesday when I return to the job...

Let me think...

3 small single tokes to relax muscle spasms between 5:30 and about 7 am, then one more a few moments ago.

The same Banana Kush some 9 toed guy at NNCC said I should pick up for "day use" two visits back which is almost two months ago.

BTW, I'm still enjoying the Amber Glass, but about 30 minutes after a nice match sized piece on top of the 213 OG or Master Kush it's bed time...

I have a dang good first telescope for viewing the night skies and use the charts at Weatherunderground, but the hilltop is to the west and blocks early evening views.

I hardly had time to find, focus, look and show Mrs. Au before Saturn set.

I can see people across the 118 fwy from my back yard, but they are all upside down...

Learn something new everyday

A spotting scope... Hmmmm...

but I have nothing to reach out that far.

I posted my snow pictures and after re-sizing to zoom in, you can see the mall and 118 when you look closely, but I doubt a .50 BMG would get that far, but one can dream. :slaugh:

well, maybe not a spotting scope as much as a snooping scope :slaugh:

i've been toying with the idea of getting something new to take to that range... thinking of saving up and getting maybe an AR. even CA compliant would be nice - but I DO have friends in Texas LOL....

Aw, heck, you can shoot mine.

It's fixed with an AimPoint zeroed at 50 yards for quick/sure defense, but since the range is closed nights, I'll need to remove the tac/light as the bulbs don't last long under such stress.

It was great at Burbank during a night shoot.

Ooops... Cat thirty.

Laters Bro...

Steel targets at varing ranges and the instructor designating each target with a laser pointer.

Guess who was first and on target...

i haven't fired anything resembling an AR since the early 70's... wonder if i still know how to hold one LOL. but thanks, i'll take ya up on that one of these days, you betcha!

50 yards huh, right now i am doubting i could hit the side of a barn (even with a shotgun!). there was a time when i could nail a target at 1500 yards.... ahhh the lost days of my youth. (or more accurately the lost eyesight of my youth)

that tac light sounds nice... one of these days i gotta modernize. especially now that i am impaired. maybe one on the old S&W.

so i think i can guess and feel fairly confident!

ok. back to the birds....

Great photos all! I imagine the Galaxy Train running around the base of that Christmas Tree Cluster...I think the medication is helping on that visual...
