I'm thinking of getting rid of my traditional land line & either going cell only or maybe VoIP. Anybody have a service they love & would recommend? Can you buy a VoIP appliance that has a one time cost without a monthly fee?

Been without landline for over a year now. Do not miss it one bit. I was particularly irked by the surcharge to keep one's name unpublished. Does it really cost them anything to omit the name? What is the point of the 1.50 or whatever to be anonymous?

I have worked with Voip alot and it sucks, trust me if I were you I would just go with a cell phone.

If your computer is not up to speed to handle the data coming in from the VOip you will get breakups during the conversation as the packets will get dropped from your computer.

Magic Jack is a decent option, call quality is pretty good. You just have to leave your computer on all the time in order to receive calls. It is a yearly fee, I believe there may be some discounts if ordered online. You can always use Skype as well another good service.

this is my buddys site that i did some developing for. its a blog site but its all about voip and hes one of the best in the industry. if you have any more question, feel free to pm me and i can get you answers on anything voip related.
