That is not accurate. What you describe is now against the law for doctors, and when it was legal only a tiny few were actually getting bonus money for prescribing certain drugs. Ambien has not been actively marketed for years. It sells itself. All drugs have side effects, but I certainly agree that MMJ is waaaay better for you than any sleep medication.

Very true and very sad. The greed of big pharma companies will keep MJ illegal.

Huh? Maybe you did not know doctors at urgent care centers are handing out these pills hand over fist? Your doctor at Harvard may not care what drugs you take, but the little guys do. I don't think drugs should be free, but there is a prejudice for homeopathic medicines in America because they are cheap to develop. And every president faces the same problem with the drug companies. They set out to change the system 'for the people', but soon realize these companies are making way too much money for it to be restructured.

thankfully we live in cali and have the freedom to choose an effective medicine that comes in plant form vs chemicals from a lab that cause a whole list of side effects. w/ my nightly combo of flowers and an edible (and sometimes concentrates) i haven't had to take a sleeping pill in over 4yrs!!

I am well aware of what is going on in medicine, it's my job. I know about drug companies and urgent care centers. My doctor at Harvard??? Is that supposed to be a dig? LOL I would be happy to have a Harvard-educated doctor. Someone posted that doctors are getting paid by Pharma per prescription, I simply posted that that is now against the law. I said nothing about homeopathic or Presidential politics.

Thank you everyone adding top this Thread.
Some one said don't take Benzo or Z Benzo you'll be hooked for life. LOL maybe some, not me the only thing I've gotten hooked on was cigs and been off them 5 years. Like I said I took Ambien for 9 years and didn't have any withdraws that were very apparent. On the road the 70's with KISS and BOC and the Police etc etc on coke and crank I would get off the road for a couple of weeks never missed the drugs. Just lucky I guess. The Tamazapam they are giving me now might as well be sugar pills. NEXT

Insomnia is really a serious issue.

I really hope that you find something that will work for you.

Bless you.

Question Re: Probably best to avoid Ambien.

OMG!
That sleep walking and eating thing happened to me years ago when I took Halcion. I woke up in the am to find that I had shelled, cleaned and eaten a whole Dungeness crab in the middle of the night. Now, that's messy!
My docs balked at giving me Ambien and now I have to drink a potent Jack and Coke 3-4 nites a week cuz I have nothing else to help me visit with the Sandman.
But I remember sleep walking at the age of 8 when I had no idea that there was better living through chemistry.
Am trying all the holistic methods like deep breathing, daily exercise, yadda yadda, but it's a nightly crap shoot.
I hate to go to bed then I hate to wake up in the am.
What's the answer?

No kidding eh?! My boyfriend took ambien, stayed awake and ended up screaming like a little girl at hallucinations and stuff in the room. He thought i was his saving Angel of grace and mercy and clung to me for the rest of the night while i sat up with him and helped him through the scary stuff. I was terrified and i wasn't even on anything. I medicated a little after he finally fell asleep cuz i was still jittery from having experienced that with him. The next morning he remembered everything and was very upset and embarrassed but thankful that i had been there. I don't credit ambien for finally putting him asleep. My voice did it as well as some incense and my second hand MMJ smoke did the trick. Poor guy. Glad you're not taking it anymore.

Since different strains affects (or is it effects) each individual differently, my suggestions may not work for you.

The way I have been sleeping well for three years now is to eat an edible prior to bedtime.

It took a lot of experimenting to find just the right dose.

I wish you good luck in your search.

Sleep deprivation is a horrible thing to experience.

Re: Probably best to avoid Ambien.

You said that you've suffered from insomnia your whole life ? How about during basic training ? It seems to me that's the only time in my life that I was able to sleep well. While I usually roll my eyes and ignore people that preach exercise as a cure all, in this case there might be something to it? Does the VA have any DI's back from combat injuries, getting physical rehab ? Maybe you just need one to follow you around doing their normal thing ? uuuggghhhh, how much would that suck, like some bad karma hell, stuck in basic for life just so you can get some sleep, but then always having to wake up too early to some angry f*cker yelling at you?

That's funny the reference to boot camp. In 1970 they were pretty rough on young Marine recruits. Rack time was never more than 5 hours and you didn't sleep you passed out from exhaustion.

Re: Probably best to avoid Ambien.

Ambien is bad ju-ju.

I remember being woken up a short while after taking it by a call from my girlfriend at the time. Throughout the whole conversation, the digital clock from my DVR was flying around the room while it changed colors. Very reminiscent of psychedelics, but very uncomfortable. It was one of the strangest conversations I've ever had.

Of course, that was how the rest of my night went: I couldn't fall back to sleep and got stuck watching the clock fly around for hours.

That's really scary In my quest to read stuff on sleep disorders I saw a paper presented at the annual sleep convention in 2008 they spent good money studying a Walrus's sleep apnea which is natural when they sleep under water and come up for air. The VA spends money that should go to veteran health care. Hope they had fun.

I must agree with the Exercise post. Ever since I've been in Physical Therapy, I've been sleeping quite well! And for those of us with Fibromyalgia, you know that deep sleep is almost impossible to acquire.

Talking Re: Probably best to avoid Ambien.

Insomnia is very treatable, however, most patients MUST account for their activity throughout the WHOLE day, and that should include everything taken orally, all activities, and even the enviroment of the sleeping quarter's. Unfortunately, most patients discontinue the treatment protocol before it can be fully grasped by your "harddrive".
Daily exercise, proper nutrition, and even alternative medicine like Acupuncture & Spinal Manipulation may help, but every case is different.
Just remember that those powerful little pills that you may take for ANY condition, can be contaminated, mislabeled,or made incorrectly!!
That's why we have so many RECALLs and the long term side-effects aren't usually known until it's too late !!
Through trial & error, my Wife's insomnia is alleviated by .....OG Kush!!
GCH
