Help: Wife Has Insomnia, But MMJ Makes Her Paranoid!

Help: my beloved wife of 32 years this month, and mother of my two grown kids, has terrible, horrible, rotten insomnia and often comes to bed at 3 or 4 am-- she can't fall asleep or stay asleep.

Back in the old days she loved hash very occasionally, but she had a bad experience with a brownie at a party which made her really paranoid and scared her away from even considering MMJ.

What MMJ would be best for insomnia but guaranteed 99 44/100's percent non-paranoia inducing, oh wise WT'ers out there in the great resource of this forum and this stellar website (flattery will get you everywhere)??

I am sincerely and profoundly obliged for your help on this problem that hurts the one I love every night of her life.

Re: Help: Wife Has Insomnia, But MMJ Makes Her Paranoid!

First, I would get her a rec. of her own from a MMJ Doctor.
Then I would suggest some well grown GDP.

Jackie papers:
1. Of course: not suggesting anything illegal. Wife has serious medical problem here- she would certainly be eligible for her own certification; beside, I flunked "sharing" in kindergarden;
2. Forgive my ignorance: What is GDP? Gross Domestic Product? Didn't know that was MMJ.

Re: Help: Wife Has Insomnia, But MMJ Makes Her Paranoid!

Take her medical records from her regular doctor to the Medical marijuana Doctor, particularly all the scripts she's tried over the years and anything she's using now, even vitamins (taking them at night can keep you up)

He'll probably be able to fashion a regimen for her, where she tries Indicas in small doses on the weekends until you find her strain. I have heard of people who sleep well on Sativas, but I am not one of those people.

The reason I say take a list of all the scripts is drugs interact in the strangest way. Also, some sleep prescriptions probably worked a little bit and finding an herbal strain that aped that mechanism when it hits, will help her relax and sleep because it is familiar.

I have horrible sleep problems related to my arthritis and this is what works for me:

Smoke whatever works for sleep for you (for me it's Romulan and Kona Gold right now) Get comfortable in bed with the TV on, something you like but is not too upsetting. As soon as you feel yourself falling asleep click off the TV with the remote. This is usually good for three to five hours a night. If you wake up before you've gotten eight hours repeat the above.

My whole life changed for the better when I was able to get eight hours. It's the hidden problem with chronic illness, lack of sleep. It causes all kinds of problems in your life some of them as bad as the illness itself. Good luck

You said youre wife ate a brownie at a party and it made her paranoid. It sounds like she wasnt a heavy user when she ate the brownie.Brownies can hit you pretty hard especially if youre tolerance is low.A party probably wasnt the best setting for her to eat it.Maybe if she was at home she wouldnt have gotten paranoid.I say have her try marajuana again in a good setting such as home and see how she is.If she gets paranoid at home then maybe marajuana isnt for her.As for her sleeping problem, indicas work the best and I find that some good hash always puts me out.:nod2:

#1:find a tincure(and put droplettes in her soup...milk...water ect) experiment with how many drops work for her........

#2:start making your own edibles.......so you can control the THC content and she how she reacts.....

Try these trials with her @ HOME.....so she wont freak out in public

Good luck and God Bless

make sure she starts with low doses or maybe even a mid grade medicine. I have seen beginners suffer from panic attacks when they smoke the strong stuff that we are used to. You know they think they are gonna have a heart attack.. but not really.. Stick with indica and stay at home or somewhere safe for her. good luck, grand daddy purple is what u need

Re: Help: Wife Has Insomnia, But MMJ Makes Her Paranoid!

Yeah, insomnia sucks bad

I agree with the other posters who have said that the edible was probably what caused your wife's paranoid reaction. I've actually seen this happen before, to friends of mine who were inexperienced with MMJ.

I'd also recommend that your wife steer clear of sativas and focus on indicas, specifically kushes. Personally, I fond that the best thing for sleep is OG Kush topped with some kief. 2-3 bonghits of that & I'm passing out in the chair Have your wife try 1 bonghit tho !!

I also try to do other non-med stuff to wind-down & go sleepy-bye. I love hot cocoa, so I always have some of that. I get the sugar-free stuff which actually tastes very good. Sometimes I make it with milk instead of water & I use medicated milk. Very good tasting and very mild effects.

I also make sure that I have quiet time before going to sleep - ie, no loud TV or music and if I do watch TV it's something calming (not politics or documentaries). I like The Food Network - it's very relaxing to watch people cook, for some odd reason. Oh & no TV in the bedroom ! The bedroom should also be dark & cool in temp.

Can you tell that I suffer from insomnia, too ? :slaugh:

I want to sincerely thank everybody for their caring, knowledgeable and extremely helpful responses to my inquiry. My wife is seeing a doctor about becoming a certified CA patient tomorrow and we will try everything everybody took the time and concern to suggest.
This is a very impressive and wonderful community here and you all really helped-- my wife is overwhelmed!
THANKS

This is a really good point. I know a lot of people that would have a hard time smoking some of the medicines we use. These are experienced smokers, but who just never needed much more than commercial mids. If they try the kinda stuff a lot of us WT'ers get, it would just be way too strong of a dosage. I guess its a combination of body chemistry and tolerance.

Re: Help: Wife Has Insomnia, But MMJ Makes Her Paranoid!

Go with a strong indica, I know my favorite is black domina, puts you right to sleep. Afghani works great too, and GDP is ok too, but black domina just put s you out.

I've used lunesta and ambien, both work great in putting me to sleep and keeping me asleep, just something to think about.

I am not a doctor. But, what you described clearly warrants a sleep study. Go to a doctor, describe the symptoms, get a referral to a sleep center for a sleep study. Get a sleep study. There are many sleep disorders that can be treated with mmj, but not by simply throwing anything at it. Get a sleep study done and then you can start to think about mmj to use for your wife. For example, if your wife has obstructive sleep apnea and she gets heavily sedated from mmj, she could suffer brain damage! Get a sleep study done!

Re: Help: Wife Has Insomnia, But MMJ Makes Her Paranoid!

JUST A NOTE:

mmj patient is giving you good advice.

So many people "self medicate" with mmj without seeing a Doctor for a particular issue. Many thing can cause sleep disorders. It could be serious!

Once she knows what is actually happening with her health, then trying MMJ is an option.

Imagine an "IBS" patient who gets relief from MMJ but never sees a GI Doc. and finds out too late that it's cancer....

She needs to see a physician . Insomnia can be complicated from a respiratory to neurological , endocrine to rheumatic problem.

Self medication is a minefield. I can give about 100 bad case scenario's.

Re: Help: Wife Has Insomnia, But MMJ Makes Her Paranoid!

Obviously, she should see a Doctor, and hopefully find the underlying cause and cure it.

If it cannot be cured by conventional medicine, then the advice given for indica's is sound. Avoid sativa's as they are more likely to activate her paranoia.

Good sleep habits are typically the most reliable. A regular routine, tv off, brush yer teeth, read in bed fer a half hour then lights out..... You get the idea, you establish a regular routine before bed and follow that same routine EVERY night.

I am an insomniac, have had trouble with sleep for more than twenty years. Only in the last three or four years have I found my "magic bullet"...... Coupled with a routine like above, I take Trazedone (makes me sleepy, but is an anti depressant not really a "sleeping" pill), and smoke a bowl of an indica...then off to bed I go... usually works these days.

At any rate, I just want to pass on some hope.... As miserable as insomnia is it can usually be overcome.... and OMG is it wonderful to get a good nite's rest again!

best regards

...if somebody with a sleep disorder starts taking pharmaceuticals before getting a sleep study done, they could end up heavily addicted to a sleep medication and cause all kinds of organ damage if they are not sleeping due to an underlying, undiagnosed, maybe even a misdiagnosed sleep disorder. Been there, had it happen to me. ...take my advice, please...get a sleep study done and don't start pharmaceuticals before getting a sleep study done. If you have to do anything out of desperation while waiting for a sleep study, small amounts of indica at night, some sativa during the day to get a good energy burn going. Don't start taking vitamins and hormones and crap like that, wait for the sleep study results. Oh, and...NO caffeine. And, don't let a sleep disturbed loved one tell you how much they love coffee...it's probably killing them, if not just making them ill! Caffeine is bad, bad, bad.

If you need info about sleep doctors or hospitals that have sleep disorder centers, ...google "sleep disorders" to learn about sleep disorders, and google "sleep study", or "sleep disorder center" (plus your county or city or your favorite hospitals), or PM me. Some hospitals with big sleep centers will take emergency patients, if it's that bad, don't bull-shit them. If you have the resources, you can get a sleep study done quickly and know what's going on with your sleep, if you get a good sleep study done, or at least you'll have a place to start. If you are strapped, go for Medi-Cal insurance, see a doctor and tell him/her about your sleep disturbance, demand a sleep study politely and DO NOT let them tell you to take pharmaceuticals first, that's a scam to get you hooked on pharmaceuticals -- a last, absolute, ....you have abso-phucking-lutely no other choice, and even then, you may want to refrain from pharmaceuticals, they are *that* bad and I have seen them almost always cause problems, and yes...I know...some people tolerate and benefit from pharmaceuticals...but not as a first line of health care.

Good luck!

Good luck!
This is classic. My MD at the hmo (and I have a really good union hmo) wanted to put me on Ambien. I got a three day sample and tried it. One night it didn't put me to sleep, but made me REALLY stoned-I had trouble walking-and I was pretty groggy the next day. At that point a friend of mine who is a patient asked me why I was screwing around with pharmaceuticals when the real answer was right in the bowl I had in my hand. After a lightbulb moment, I got my prescription for Ambien and went right down and got my rec, and have been getting reasonable amounts of sleep. My work schedule is different every day/week/month, so my body clock never has had a chance to establish a rythm for the past 30 years.

I agree with most everybody else-a strong Indica is the best thing for night-night. Sativas can be really bad for paranoia, and a really good indicator that you have a Sativa is the word "Haze" in the strain name. Also, a lot of hybrids have some part of both the mental and body effect-as pure an Indica as you can find is gonna do it-perhaps even some Indica concentrate.

Peace and One Love,
'bug

Re: Help: Wife Has Insomnia, But MMJ Makes Her Paranoid!

I feel for your wife, I have terrible chronic insomnia as a result of pain.

A good strong Indica of most any type, I suggest using a vaporizer, and maybe adding some bubble or full melt indica based hash.

If you don't know what is Indica and what isn't ask your dispensary operators, if they are worth their salt, they should be able to help you.

Past that, I agree GrandDaddy Purple is a good relaxation medication, but I think I prefer something more fully indica, like a nice strong OG or Bubba Kush to help me sleep.

BUT FOR THE SAKE OF ALL THINGS HOLY keep her away from any strong Sativa type flowers, these can amplify feelings of anxiety, especially if overgrown(allowed to bud for too long), which a lot of them are.
