Any Wiccans around?

Just curious if there are any out there. I'm not one, I have agnostic views and don't believe in anything supernatural, including the existence of God(s). But the reason I ask is because I bought a book on the Wiccan calender, primarily because I was interested in the stuff it had on astrology, but it had a lot of other interesting things as well. My sister is Wiccan, but we don't talk about it very much, however we do both laugh when our ultra religious family members get unnerved when they see her pentagrams
;)

Just wondering if there are any here on WT

Earthlings have such creative ideas regarding the beginnings or Time and Existence! very quaint! but you are a planet full of marvelous story tellers!

Re: Any Wiccans around?

I dabbled in the wiccan religion a few years ago when I was trying to find where I fit best. It is an interesting religion and once you start studying it you realize that it is not the demon infested religion that a lot of your mainstream religions would like to make it out to be.

Re: Any Wiccans around?

I've considered myself a solitary wiccan for well over a decade.

Scott Cunningham's little book "The truth about Witchcraft" today is a great quick read for anyone curious about what Wicca is really about.

You can pick up a used copy on Amazon for about $.01 + shipping if you're interested.

I also have a website with some basic information if anyone's curious. I haven't updated the site in many moons, but I keep it up because it still get's hits and from the comments in the guestbook I guess people still like it. PM me if you'd like the website addy.

Blessed be,

no not at all. It is actually a very peaceful religion.

The Wiccan Rede states "Harm none and do as ye will" as well as the three fold law of anything you do comes back on you three fold. Here is a little excerpt that sums it up.

most believers share a general set of beliefs and practices. They believe in the Goddess, respect nature, and hold both polytheistic and pantheistic views. Most Wiccans accept the so-called Wiccan Rede, an ethical code that states “If it harm none, do what you will.” Wiccans believe in meditation and participate in rituals throughout the year, celebrating the new and full moons

here's a post I found on a local BBS a LONG time ago (author unknown) but all the ideals still hold true

Pledge to Pagan Spirituality
(I found this one on a local BBS, yeah, back in the dark ages)

I am a Pagan, and I dedicate Myself to channeling the Spiritual Energy of my Inner self to help and to heal myself and others.
  • I know that I am a part of the Whole of Nature. May I grow in understanding of the Unity of all Nature. May I always walk in balance.
  • May I always be mindful of the diversity of Nature as well as it's Unity and may I always be tolerant of those whose race, appearance, sex, sexual preference, culture, and other ways differ from my own.
  • May I use the Force(psychic power) wisely and never use it for aggression nor for malevolent purposes. May I never direct it to curtail the free will of another.
  • May I always be mindful that I create my own reality and that I have the powewr within me to create positivity in my life.
  • May I always act in honorable ways: being honest with myself and others, keeping my word whenever I have given it, fulfilling all responsibilities and commitments I have taken on to the best of my ability.
  • May I always remember that whatever is sent out always returns magnified to the sender. May the Forces of Karma move swiftly to remind me of these spiritual commitments when I have begun to falter from them, and may I use this Karmic feedback to help myself grow and be more attuned to my Inner Pagan Spirit.
  • May I always remain strong and committed to my Spiritual ideals in the face of adversity and negativity. May the force of my Inner Spirit ground out all malevolence directed my way and transform it into positivity. May my Inner Light shine so strongly that malevolent forces can not even approach my sphere of existence.
  • May I always grow in Inner Wisdom & Understanding. May I see every problem that I face as an opportunity to develop myself spiritually in solving it.
  • May I always act out of Love to all other beings on this Planet--to other humans, to plants, to animals, to minerals, to elementals, to spirits, and to other entities.
  • May I always be mindful that the Goddess and God in all their forms dwell within me and that this divinity is reflected through my own Inner Self, my Pagan Spirit.
  • May I always channel Love and Light from my being. May my Inner Spirit, rather than my ego self, guide all my thoughts, feelings, and actions.
So mote it be!

I wonder if any one on WT knows the significance of a pentagram.

For one, it is the oldest (verifiable) religious symbol known to human. It dates earlier than 3000 bc, back to ancient mesopotamia, and has been found in various writings around the world since.

All of the sides of the pentagram follow the "golden ratio" also known as divine proportion and has been utilized by artists and mathematicians for centuries.

Quote:
Each intersection of edges sections the edges in golden ratio: the ratio of the length of the edge to the longer segment is φ, as is the length of the longer segment to the shorter. Also, the ratio of the length of the shorter segment to the segment bounded by the 2 intersecting edges (a side of the pentagon in the pentagram's center) is φ. As the four-color illustration shows:

There's quite a bit more to it than that. I personally believe in Gods AND Goddesses. More so than that.. I believe in balance. I had a very hard time believing in religions based on just a male heirarchy. Life is all about balance.

Interesting, and thanks for your reply!!! I personally despise organized religion and all of its lies and blasphemy. Example: If you are a Christian and believe that God's Holy Sabbath is Sunday (as most of the world does), then you are worshiping in vain, and contrary to the word of God. Rome, in order to appease the pagans, had the audacity to change God's holy day of worship from Saturday, to the pagan day of sun worship ... Sunday. There are many more examples, but I'm just too lazy to list them all...

God Bless...

Re: Any Wiccans around?

i'm neither wiccan nor pagan, but they were definitely my favorite religions to study when i was studying religious anthropology. i have my own personal views on religion as well as what i personally believe, and the only judgement i have against some religions comes when some try to force their views on others (i've had many, many, many, uhm, "discussions" with people trying to shove things down my throat...). i must say, however, that when i was doing research on wicca for some of my classes, the people i talked to were amazingly interesting and i have even adopted some aspects of pagan and wiccan beliefs into my own. the old pagan religions were incredibly fascinating, and i love talking with people who practice these religions because i love hearing their point of view (not just about religion, but about society as a whole...)

I never believed that, my sister lives a more selfless life than any other Christian I know (or anyone really). It pisses me off when they continue to ridicule ancient religions as demonic, I mean, if these pagan religions are so evil, then why celebrate pagan traditions, such as the celebration of Christmas? Just about all of the Christmas traditions are of pagan origin, and even Christians acknowledge Jesus probably was not born during the winter, why not pick their own holiday?

It's pretty sad that a religion responsible for the destruction of most ancient religions demonizes them as evil, all while claiming to be a religion of peace and love. Too many people take their religion far too seriously.

Re: Any Wiccans around?

Has anyone ever heard of Starhawk? She is one of my heros.

She is the founder of the Reclaimation movement of ancient and goddess traditions. She is a neo pagan, feminists, activist, and wonderfull writer of The Spiral Dance, Dreaming the Dark, and The Earth Path.

I don't claim any one religion as I am not willing to discount the words or messages of all the others.
I think I'm an atheist. I don't know for sure.

I wouldn't call Crowley wiccan at all, but if we're lumping all pagan theologies into one group, as so oftentimes happens, it would.

actually, its widely believed he was part of a witch's coven early in his occult career. i believe the witch's axiom "do what ye will" was the early inspiration for thelemas "do what thou wilt, shall be the whole of the law". though the difference between the two is huge.

Crowley claimed to have not "written" that quote and the book it came from, but to have had it dictated to him by a god/demon ...but it could've been dictated by a wiccan god/demon I guess.

well, it was an intelligence speaking through him. aiwass (value=93) was what it said it was called. reading through "the book of the law" you find its a conversation of three individuals. nuit, hadit, and crowley himself referred to as the "prophet". so its likely to assume there's a lot of his personality and influence in there.

Crowley was into some hard drugs too, like laudanum, opium, cocaine, hashish, alcohol, ether, mescaline and heroin, and who knows what else...could explain his conversations with God/demons I believe I may have conversed with some supernatural entities back in the day
