NORML representatives will be speaking about the 3 raids and arrests by LAPD on collectives yesterday (10/28/09) in the San Fernando Valley as well as the raid by LAPD last week on Craig Rubin's Temple 420.

Los Angeles NORML will be hosting a "Letter Writing Party" get together on Sunday morning November 1st at Bruce Margolin's Law office in West Hollywood from 9-11:30 am.

We are asking people to give us an hour of their time, that's all. More would be great.

The purpose of the meeting will be to discuss the current situation in Los Angeles and also to write letters to Los Angeles city officials about the medical marijuana ordinance that will then be hand delivered to each council members office on Monday Nov 2nd.

Also letters will be written to state officials urging support of AB 390, the Ammiano bill.

In talks with aides to council members it has become clear that we need to start an old fashioned letter writing campaign. Many aides have told me to "have your people write letters instead of yelling outside".

What we are told constantly is that politicians like to look at stacks of letters from constituents and point to them and say "look at all these letters I get about this". Apparently emails and phone calls have a much less effect, they are tallied and quantified but letters are actually read.

And the more letters we write the greater our impact will be.

This could be groundbreaking, getting all the local activist patients and groups together to plan a unified action.

Just a reminder of this action event Sunday morning from 9-11:30 AM at Bruce Margolin's Law Office in West Hollywood. With half a dozen collectives raided by LAPD in the past two weeks, operators arrested and charged with marijuana sales and possession the time to act is now. Don't let apathy hurt us more than LAPD. Please make an extra effort to attend this letter writing party/meeting and also help spread the word in the community. Thank you. This is Stephanie and I was just released from Federal Prison for MMJ and now I am jumping through hoops in a Half Way house in Watts. Write great letters everyone's voice helps alot.

We are glad to hear from you Stephanie! I have wrtten dozens of letters myself to the council and various others in the last few weeks, but hearing from you on WT will inspire me to write a few dozen more. Remember people, printing out the letters and sending them snail mail supposedly carries more weight with the politicians.

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Those supporting the legalization of marijuana are taking a stand against plans by Los Angeles City officials to ban the sale of medical marijuana.

Members of the National Organization for Reform of Marijuana Laws and their supporters gathered in West Hollywood Sunday morning to compose handwritten letters to send to Los Angeles City Councilmembers and state lawmakers.

They're hoping to convince officials not to approve an ordinance proposed by city attorney Carmen Trutanich that would prohibit sales of medical marijuana.

Cheryl Aichele suffers from a chronic medical condition that causes her severe pain. She says if she can't purchase marijuana from a legal dispensary, she'll be forced to get it on the streets.

"Right now, I'm able to go into a respectable location, get my medicine and be safe. The city of Los Angeles has screwed up because they haven't put any regulations in place, so none of these places are regulated now," said Aichele through tears.

Los Angeles has hundreds of storefront medical marijuana dispensaries. Most sell pot and pay state sales tax.

L.A.'s moratorium of opening of new medical marijuana dispensaries was struck down by a judge. Some believe that the proposed ordinance will force most of them to close.

The city attorney wants to require dispensaries to grow their pot on site and limit the number of plants they can cultivate. That means each dispensary would only be able to serve a small number of patients.

"If people think it's bad now with 800 medical marijuana collectives in the city, if Trutanich's ordinance passes, we'll have 10,000 dispensaries because he's requiring collectives to be of 99 plants or less," said medical marijuana activist Brett Stone.

The city council is expected to consider the ban on sales of medical marijuana sometime in the next few weeks.
