But they have won votes by promising to deliver more efficiently than the left, while working to lower taxes, improve financial regulation, and grapple with aging populations.

Europe’s conservatives, says Michel Winock, a historian at the Paris Institut d’Études Politiques, “have adapted themselves to modernity.” When Nicolas Sarkozy of France and Germany’s Angela Merkel condemn the excesses of the “Anglo-Saxon model” of capitalism while praising the protective power of the state, they are using Socialist ideas that have become mainstream, he said."

Despite all linguistic, cultural, and historical distinctions, European countries are just a massive blurry blob to us Yanks.

Yep, yep, yep. That describes about 80% of my fellow female students. I think I'm the only girl under 30 who doesn't wear snow boots with denim minis. LOL

Call me crazy! I think if it's hot enough to be wearing a mini, it's way too hot for snow boots and if it's cold enough for snow boots, then it's too cold for a mini. Boy am I outta touch or what!

Maybe that's why they want to increase the school day for kids now, so we can find Europe on a map.

Although considering the matter at hand from what I can tell no socialists were involved. Not that I am super in the know as far as German's political parties go but they are more social democrats than socialists, although for the sake of the American public if they don't wear a flag pin, own a gun, and talk about Jesus twice a sentence they are socialist.

Basically a lot of this has to do with energy, and because of this nuclear stocks went up, solar and wind went down. Germany has an aging nuclear power infrastructure that was being phased out by previous coalition in power. But the more pro business parties who are in now want to keep it running despite leakage problems and storage problems they've been having because there something like 2 million a day generated in revenue.

So maybe, not unlike the USA, money makes a lot of these things happen. And in low economic times especially the environment and sustainability takes a back seat to money now.

Not to double post much but a better title to this article would be "Capitalists take note" because what I get from the article is that if the right wing were to embrace many of the left's key issues.. (see above) they would be making much more progress. But since here they're more worried about making sure gay people can't get married and that they have the right to buy a rail gun someday that probably wont happen.

I always advocate mini-skirts. In fact my eyes rarely travel South enough to note footwear. I will keep an eye out though, and attempt to confirm this possible fashion no no. Never too cold to wear a mini...

If you change the mini to shorts, and add some flourescent shirt to the snow boots you have the company controller where I work, well the assistant controller. But he's like a middle aged, 250lb+ guy who looks a whole lot like Carl Windslow from family matters.

Nope, but lucky for me he liked liked shorter latin men so being tall and as white as possible I avoided all the sexual harassment. That being said he is a really nice guy and a really great cook who would always bring in killer food.

Before all the lay offs here we used to have killer pot lucks, once a month about. Now they are just kind of sad.
