Reply from Rep Henry Waxman District 30

Mr. **** ******
*** ****Avenue Santa Monica, California 90405-5558

Dear Mr. ******:

Thank you for contacting me to express your support for
the right of patients to use medicinal marijuana. I am glad to know
that we are in agreement on this issue and appreciate your taking
the time to get in touch.

People in the advanced stages of terminal diseases such
as cancer and AIDS should receive compassionate pain relief,
and I have long supported the compassionate use of prescription
drugs and therapies, including medicinal marijuana. I was deeply
disappointed with the U.S. Supreme Court's decision that the
federal government has the authority to prohibit states from
allowing the use of marijuana for medicinal purposes and have
consistently voted against legislation that classifies marijuana as
an addictive drug that should not be legalized for medicinal use.

In the 109th Congress, I cosponsored the States' Rights to
Medical Marijuana Act (H.R. 2087), which would have prohibited
the federal government from interfering with or restricting the
medical use of marijuana in accordance with state laws, and the
Truth in Trials Act (H.R. 4272), which sought to allow individuals
charged with marijuana-related offenses to reference state
medical marijuana laws as part of their defense. In addition, as
you know, on June 28, 2006, I voted for an amendment that would
have prohibited the Justice Department from interfering with state
laws that authorize medical marijuana use. Although I am
disappointed that these measures were not successful in the 109th
Congress, you can be certain that I will continue my effort to
advance federal policy in the new Congress that is both
sympathetic and medically reasonable.

Again, thank you for contacting me and I hope you will
continue to keep in touch on all matters of concern.

With kind regards, I am

Sincerely,

Henry A. Waxman

Member of Congress.
