For real! I noticed the City Council zeroing in a bit on Ventura Blvd. in the Woodland Hills/Tarzana area in particular. I can totally understand that. There's one section between Fallbrook and Valley Circle where I've counted literally 6 co-ops within that 1 mile (or so) radius. And a lot of the co-ops in that area are owned by the same people.

How some folks on here fail to see this as excessive is simply beyond me. I'm all for safe access, but c'mon. Gimmie a friggin break.

Are all those co-ops open for business? This whole notion of "legal" and "illegal" co-ops is a load of dung IMHO. They just need to post the rules, and anyone who follows those rules should be OK.

Yeah, they're all up and running and have been for a while now. I hear ya with the utter confusion about legal vs. illegal, and I know that this really is the cc's fault. That's why I'm 100% behind regulations. I'm tired of worrying about which places are legit and which aren't. Besides, half the pre-ICO co-ops have hash bars and whatnot, which I'm almost postive are gonna be outlawed via the impending regulations. There's no way hash bars are gonna be kosher. So even after the regultions, there's still gonna be confusion.

At the same time, the regulations will (hopefully) establish some clear rules. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Re: A New Map--Co-ops, Legally licensed--Applied for exemption --Application denied

Just a little oversight on my part.

I guess I could have pasted the article in also??

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lano...s-angeles.html

Where's the weed? Mapping L.A.'s marijuana dispensaries

It's green. It's herbal. It's organic. It's compassionate. It's healing. And it's nonprofit too.

This plethora of adjectives is not describing a gimmick to cash in on alternative energy or a new diet plan.

No, it's L.A.'s latest retail craze: medical marijuana.

Those words, pulled from the Los Angeles city clerk's website, were the most common descriptors in the names of the 966 dispensaries registered in the city.

A Times analysis of pot store names, however, showed that the most frequently occurring word was the socialist-tinged "collective," appearing in 199 of the names.

Whether that choice of words is merely merchandising double-speak or genuine cultural expression -- a point on which reasonable minds might differ -- may ultimately be of little consequence.

But by plotting the addresses of the pot dispensaries, The Times has made another finding: At least 260 of them fall within 1,000 feet of a school, a library or a park. The distance is significant because it's the buffer in a proposed law the Los Angeles City Council has been kicking around for a couple of years. The ordinance is still pending, with no vote yet scheduled, while council members figure out how to shield their constituents from too much underground pot culture without trampling the dispensaries' legal right to exist.

The marijuana conundrum goes back to the Compassionate Use Act of 1996, passed by California voters. It legalized the use of marijuana for pain or illness. Then in 2003, state Senate Bill 420 (yes, the same number as the underground name for pot) authorized the attorney general to set possession limits and shielded physicians from prosecution.
Alarmed by the rate at which dispensaries were opening, the Los Angeles City Council in 2007 froze the number at the 186 already licensed. No new ones were supposed to open unless applicants received a hardship exemption.

But the moratorium had the opposite effect as would-be pot impresarios rushed to reserve their licenses by filing applications. The city attorney opined that enforcement officials could not shut them down while their applications are pending.

By the time the city cut off the exemption loophole in June, 779 applications had been filed. That's not to say that every one of them is actually selling pot. Many of the registered businesses exist only on paper, apparently filed by entrepreneurs who hoped to get a foothold. Among them are the 58 registered at a single address in Northridge.

The City Council has recently begun crawling through the 779 hardship applications, deciding on a case-by-case basis which will be allowed. It has reviewed about 85 applications, and all of them were rejected or withdrawn.

No joke, Reseda Blvd through Reseda and Northridge is even worse than Ventura. I take the bus down Reseda to get to and from school a lot (my school is on Reseda/Nordoff) and I literally can't count how many co-ops there are within the roughly 4 mile stretch between where I get on the bus and where I get off. It's that bad. There's at least 20 that are visible from the street. And that's not counting the 3 more on the corner of Lindley/Parthenia alone. Suffice to say, the bold red print doesn't surprize me in the slightest.

The valley's pretty bad in some parts folks.

Oh the humanity!!! Must be like driving through the slums of Calcutta. Think of all those poor souls in that depraved area, so many co-ops!!! I bet the children all listen to Cheech and Chong, and the parents bed down with Towelie. Please, City Council, SAVE US FROM THE ATTACK OF THE CO-OPS!!!

LOL. Naw, it ain't like that. That's not what I'm trying to say. What I'm saying is, I can understand why this bothers people who have a negative opinion of MMJ. Most of the co-ops along Reseda Blvd. are pretty shady dude. I don't know how familiar ya are with the area, but it's not the best part o' the city. Not the worst either, not even close, but ya get the idea.

You don't think that a buncha twenty-something cholo dudes smoking a joint at 9 a.m. in front of a place called T.H.C. with a giant neon pot leaf sign delegitimzies MMJ in the minds of non-MMJ users? Not even a little bit?

Don't know how this all is going to pan out but in checking the map (thanks Z) my local club had to move due to the DEA landlord letters He has a green leaf at the old location but red at the new in a different name? Now rumored he was raided last night in Canoga Park?

Ditto. The only 2 co-ops in LA I've ever been to are on Reseda Blvd.

Um, I don't know how liking 2 places on Reseda Blvd. disproves the fact that there's a ton of co-ops along that street that are clearly shady. There's plenty of places along Ventura Blvd. that aren't shady either. Their existence doesn't negate the bad apples.

I'd think since you're all familiar with the area, you'd understand what I'm talking about. Or maybe you just drive in, get your meds at the places you like, then get back on the freeway and head home?

They are caregivers. What is "shady" about providing MMJ for patients? MMJ patients used to be excited when co-ops opened up. Now all the propaganda has turned patients into narcs. Lets be careful when we paint with a broad brush. There might indeed be some "shady" co-ops on Reseda Blvd, but without real evidence we are relying on heresay. This is the United States of America we live in. Enough of the bullshit. Just post reasonable regulations, and those that can follow them will be OK, and those that don't will perhaps get shut down. It IS that simple. Moritoriams are Draconian and unfair.
