Rep Power: 147808 | My puppy girl broke her paw!!! So Wednesday I'm getting back from walking the other dogs, when I hear this tortured screaming coming from the backyard. The little stray who adopted me on 4/20 jumped through the window I had left open (wanted her to get fresh air so I left it open) and was writhing in the backyard below. The backyard is a full story and a half below the window. Immediately upon seeing me running down the stairs, she stops screaming and rolls onto her back curling around my leg whimpering. I notice her left front paw is bent at a horrible angle. I grab her and jump in the car, it's the vet's day off, but she comes in anyway to take x-rays (I love my vet soo much!). Poor little girl broke every bone, bent at an almost right angle, all the way across the paw behind the knuckles in front of the wrist. I took her to an orthopedic surgeon in Fountain Valley Thursday to get the bones pinned, the angle was so extreme there was almost no way the foot could have healed right. Turns out the two middle bones had to be fused, the two outer got pins. Now she has to wear a splint/cast, can't go for walks, is in the middle of her worst teething, Has a hard time balancing to do her "business", and can't be around her new pack. I feel so bad for the poor little girl, she's barely five months old (top canine teeth just poked through), I found her wondering on the side of the I5 in the mountains above Castaic (She sat down next to me while I was sitting waiting for a tow truck). She has had such a hard life, but is complete a sweetie, she got her house training by the second day home, learned sit, down, and stay in less than an two hours, and gets so happy when she sees me that she slaps herself with her own wagging tail! She is healing really well so far, and seems to be enjoying the extra attention but it still kills me that this happened. Not to mention the surgery was very far from cheap, although if anyone needs a great surgical vet, the people I have been going to are phenomenal. Here's a picture of the poor baby sleeping on her favorite chair. ![]() As a side note I was so worried about the baby I didn't stop to put the other puppy in her crate. When I got home 3 hours later she was curled up on my pillow asleep, nothing out of place, nothing chewed! I normally let the older dogs have run of the house since they just lay down and go to sleep till I get home, but I couldn't believe the 9 month old did the same thing, she never sits still! What a good girl. Last edited by cephas; 05-05-2009 at 11:28 PM.. |

Rep Power: 147808 | Re: My puppy girl broke her paw!!! Thank you for the kind wishes! Took Rachel back for her first check up today. Her foot is healing nicely (even though she managed to twist it in the splint) and all her other problems have cleared up so she can finally meet and socialize with her new pack! Best day I've had since November! They all immediately took to each other, like the others were just waiting for her. Really great. Here's all 3 girls meeting for the first time. ![]() All four on the back deck; and destroying bushes in the backyard (The 2 older pull off the small branches and give them to the little puppies to chew, my pack is wonderful!). ![]() ![]() Last edited by cephas; 05-10-2009 at 12:33 AM..
