Rep Power: 8399 | mellow pit bulls? That may seem like an oxymoron, but a friend of mine has the mellowest dog ever and it just happens to be a pit bull. Is that rare? |

Give them a loving, calm environment and they are the best doggies ever....it helps if they aren't puppies too, my 6 year old pitty is finally calming down and becoming a beautifully well-behaved lady...:blushing: The 6 or 7 month old or the other hand...... |

Pit bulls are just like any other great breed, and yes it is true, it depends on the owner, if you train them right and put them in a good atmosphere they become the best house dogs ever, ive owned 6 of them so far in my life time and i would not trade them for any other dog..... |

Rep Power: 449414 | Re: mellow pit bulls? In my opinion and my two cents . . . . . Dogs are the products of their owners . . . . . If you see a dog with poor behavior, look at the owner. Any breed can be trained to be aggressive. It is the responsibility of the owner to see that their pets are well behaved and social. What I hate is when some dog is allowed to jump up on you and the owner says . . . . duh, he's just glad to see you . . . . how stupid is that. ![]() One of my favorite pits, "Daddy" Tummy rubs and ear scratches to the fur kids. And Pit Rescue is a marvelous foundation. Clink clank, two cents. . |

Rep Power: 11080 | Re: mellow pit bulls? I agree with BB. some of the freindliest dogs i have met have been pit-bulls. i think they have a tendency to be abused and trained for the wrong purposes alot more than other dogs because of there muscular build and athletic, playful, and intelligent nature. Yes an angry pit is more dangerous than an angry poodle. But you can train ANY dog to be mean. |

Then the pet would be used to them, bond with them, and believe me, be the very best baby sitter ever. They do take care of their pack. Please remember, whatever breed you get, train them early. Once a pet has poor behavior, it is really a challenge for them to un-learn the improper behavior. Not impossible, but so much more work. And the really cool thing, dogs love to learn. Once they understand what it is they are suppose to do, they really get a pleasure out of it. Like, hey look at me, I know my "sit - stay" :w00t: Good luck to you, whatever you decide. Hugs .

Rep Power: 500 | Re: mellow pit bulls? you can always look into the American Staffordshire Terrier (AmStaff). they are a very similar breed but slightly smaller. The line deviated from the pits at about the turn of the twentieth century. They were used as farm hands in the 20's and 30's because of their intelligence, strength, stamina and a want to please their master. They were also used to babysit children when parents were away. They are big powerful terriers just like the pit. If you know anything about terriers you know they are rambunctious little boogers with a seemingly boundless amount of energy and the AmStaff is no different. there are a few things that i firmly believe one must do when owning a pit or amstaff: 1. Obedience training from an early age. (bb explains this in the post above) 2. Early interaction and socialization w/ dogs and people of all sizes and colors. from babies and maltese' to you're old fat uncle and the great dane next door. 3. Exercise, Exercise, Exercise... a tired dog is a calm dog. Terriers love to bark (i have a terrier, not amstaff though) and dig. if you walk them they will cut down on this dramatically. they are just too pooped to care, lol. 4. Positive reinforcement... These are strong, intelligent dogs w/ large jaws. Treat and respect them as such. They can also take a lot of pain so hitting (beyond cesar milans "touching") is always a no no on any dog, especially this "class". When training the dog, don't admonish when something is done wrong, reward when something is done right. 5. i believe in reputable breeders w/ proven lineage going back at least 3 generations to prove there has been no "fighting" blood introduced (maybe i'm crazy, lol) Also, Pits can raise your home insurance rates, i'm not sure that this is true of AmStaffs. There is a wonderful breeder of some of the worlds best amstaffs in Murrietta (sp) google amstaff breeders and you'll find her website. she is very willing to talk about her breed, so you could call her when you are serious. I hope this isn't too off the pit bull topic, but if you see an amstaff you'll know why i went to the lengths i did of explaining a little about this amazing animal. ohh... peetey on the little rascals was an AKC AmStaff. AKC recognized the breed in 1936 Last edited by Kushmonsta; 07-20-2009 at 07:21 PM.. |

Rep Power: 11017 | Re: mellow pit bulls? I had a pit mix growing up, one of the best dogs we ever had. Loved people, but wasn't fond of other dogs. I would agree that it is largely training and socializing that make the dog. Pits make great dogs but unfortunately they have been abused and have a bad reputation because of being abused. I briefly worked for the US post office and in the training we were told that the dog most likely to bite was the minature poodle. How often do you hear news reports about poodle attacks? |

For this is a life time commitment and not one to take lightly. It is not fair to the pet. Rep Power: 1871 | The only breed of dog I have a bit of trepidation around is the pit bull. My son's best friend recently got one and I was none too happy. That being said, Kilo is the sweetest little lady and I do like her. She is helping me overcome what was an irrational dislike for the breed. Two of the people I work with had pit bulls as pets and absolutely love them and say what everyone else has said, they are very sweet smart dogs. About the stories of the breed attacking children, well that bothered me as well, however that type of tragedy can happen with any breed of dog (or other pets for that matter) if the child is not properly looked after. Whether you have a Pit Bull or yapping little Chihuahua (we have a chihuahua mix), you must watch your children. At all times. No, I don't think it is rare, probably the rule. :001_smile: Last edited by mikibeck; 07-21-2009 at 10:41 AM.. Reason: typo |

I was leaving a co-op today and I heard some barking behind me. I looked... crap! It was a PACK of Toy Poodles and Miniature Chihuahuas bearing down on me a full speed. Truthfully I barely made it into my car and escaped them... I was scared to death.:cursing: Oh and here is a real mean pit bull... ![]()
