Talking Just curious...How many of us rescue animals/birds?

I rescue baby birds, mostly...crows, pigeons, mockingbirds, doves, starlings...But have also rescued dogs, possums, cats, etc...I just had 3 baby birds I rescued as small, featherless babies...They all grew up and I didn't have the room to keep them anymore. Today, I took them back to the shelter and someone there has found a nice lady with a big aviary, to take them in...They are too tame to live in the wild, now. I miss them so much, but am also very happy for them all! Anyone else want to share your story ? It would be nice to hear more animal loving stories. Have a great day and have fun!

Re: Just curious...How many of us rescue animals/birds?

At a gas station by my home; a friend and I saved a baby bird that tried to fly out of its nest but wasn't big enough yet. :( ...so We made it a home in a box and fed it worms for a little over a week and then it got the whole flying thing down and Junior went on his way. (we named him Junior)

Re: Just curious...How many of us rescue animals/birds?

I have been lucky to have had 7 cats in my lifetime. 5 of the critters were abandones/lost/sick. It brings tears to my eyes to remember how affectionate they were. I kept em all! Just got them healthy.
And I have rescued birds trapped at my place of work too, when everyone else thought they weren't important enough to bother with.
I don't care what people think. I just do it. In a world that's steeped in fault, these creatures are faultless.

Re: Just curious...How many of us rescue animals/birds?

I have two rescue dogs. One was from a humane society and had previously been owned by a homeless man and the other I rescued from an abusive owner.

I have a friend who use to rescue birds who suggested I rescue a few ducks, so hopefully I'll be saving a few in the next week or so.

Re: Just curious...How many of us rescue animals/birds?

Well I dont rescue and take home, my dog wont allow that, but snakes are common at my workplace and I often stop my bus in the middle of the road and grab the snake by the tail and let it go in the bushes, dont wanna run it over. I see injured deer at my workplace aswell and am in contact with the local wildlife rescue folks when I see an injured one, they get hit by cars alot it seems.

Re: Just curious...How many of us rescue animals/birds?

Many years back I worked at a vet/animal hospital/board/groom/bird rescue place in Sunset Beach. We got a lot of injured seagulls, actually. I loved that job and I got one of my best cat friends there. Logan and his sister were left in a box on the doorstep, and we fostered them there at the hospital until they were old enough to have homes. Then one of my co-workers took his sister and I got him. He was a wonderful kitten companion; he used to love to fetch rolled up balls of paper, he'd do it for as long as you would. He lived until the age of thirteen years, then sadly got cancer and eventually we had to let him go. He'll always be remembered as a dear member of the family.

Re: Just curious...How many of us rescue animals/birds?

I guess all my pets are rescue, my old cats one day were looking out the window next to the front door curiously all night so I check it out and bam, puppy. Then 10 years later that same puppy is looking out back almost the same way and bam, new kitten. That was a couple of months ago. I also have two other cats we got from shelters.

But speaking of birds, the day before yesterday we noticed a pigeon on our back patio, it isn't flying so it's stuck in there but somehow it got up on my grill that I had left open. I have been giving it water and some popcorn but it hasn't flow off yet. I've read that sometimes they just need water but it looks like it may have gotten caught in some of the smoke from the fires recently.

Any advice for my pigeon situation?

My cat Piper will fetch like that, all day if you let her. I think I read somewhere that it was more common in calicoes, it's pretty fun and unexpected from a cat.

Re: Just curious...How many of us rescue animals/birds?

I have three (3) male cats and they're all rescues. I can't see paying money for an animal when there are so many in pounds that need homes deperately. Oddly enough, right now, none of this lot are pound vats. One was headed there, but I got to him in time. That's Frankie (tan).

This one was almost dead on the side of the road shortly after being born. He had two brothers as well who also have fine homes. That's Bluto (black).

Ghoulie was rescued by my ex-roommate and when she moved out she took her other two cats but Ghoulie stayed with me because he and Bluto were such great pals. This is Ghoulie (gray).

And when I get more animals in the house, they too will all be rescues.

Does anyone here know anyplace that will take in a pigeon? The one that has landed in my back yard has been there living on my grill for almost two weeks now. It's looking a lot better but I am not sure what to do with it now.

Re: Just curious...How many of us rescue animals/birds?

I rescued a local teen bird, whatever you call it, this summer. I was taking out the recyclables, and as I was dropping the bag into the trashcan, I heard a chirp so I stopped, and went, huh!? Pulled the bag up, and looked in the bottom of the barrel, and saw a very tired fledgeling, who couldn't get any lift. Momma bird in the tree was trying to distract me, and the neighbor's cat was creeping around the corner, so I had to do something! I grabbed a brass decorative cage, then I did try and release the baby bird, but he was too exhausted from his ordeal and couldn't get any higher than 2 feet - can you say lunch? So, we recaptured him, put him into the cage, put him on the back porch where his mother could see him. I handled him as little as possible, and put in sterile bowls of water and food I could find.

Next morning he was lively, lots of chirping! What did I see? The momma bird was feeding him berries through the bars! So, I opened the top, and they both flew up the tree. They've been chirping outside my bedroom window every morning a bit too much, but I guess that's gratitude for you.

As far as I know, don't pigeons go where there's food? He could've imprinted on you - then, you're the 'momma'!

I've also saved my fair share of dogs, cats, kittens and puppies that people used to dump in the woods, when people felt it was 'against nature' to spay and neuter their pets - and we were the last house on the peninsula on the lake, so that was an awful lot of cats and dogs, frightened, hungry and scared. Oh, and some bunnies my cat stole, but I released back when they were old enough. Lizards, snakes, whatever. Just, um, I don't like recalling the copperhead baby I brought home, and wondered why everyone turned stark white. How on earth was I supposed to know as a child, they were MORE poisonous as babies than full grown with their bite!? I, uh, never repeated that mistake, and happy to say, I wasn't bit.

Wow. What a wonderful story about the mama and baby birdies. You did the perfect thing, by letting the mama handle the baby...Too many people do stuff like take them to shelters...and I can tell you because I volunteer at a shelter, if they cannot find homes for them, they get put to sleep. So, I am so proud of you for actually doing the right thing! That is so awesome
I, too, like snakes and am not afraid of them much, really...We used to have rattlesnakes in our trailor, under the steps, under an outdoor chair...etc...I even got to touch one, once. You and I are both really lucky we didn't get bit!
I try to take in babie birdies at the shelter, but I have my limits...I only have room for about four of them...at one time...I also have a cat (thank God she's deaf and doesn't harm my birds) but she sure stares! Anyways, the shelter only has a couple of us folks that will take in baby birds. The rest, I'm sorry to say, get put to sleep...It's always best to let nature take her course and let the mommy and/or daddy bird do what they are meant to. They will rescue their baby, if given a chance...
Keep up your awesome work with the animals!

used to have a stray that wouldn't let you get too close to him....... but he showed up to eat every day.

We called him "RAUL" Or ( Rah OOL) is the way we pronounced it.
( no disrespect to any RAUL"s out there) I just think It's a cool name for a Cat.
RAUL just disappeared one day........................??????????

Right here! At least 5 litters of kittens (where I bottle-fed them etc), a dozen grown cats (6 of which I still feed!), birds, dogs and even a rat!

I love animals! All of them! The ones who need help always seem to find me!
