I have been adopted by a humming bird mommy

I recently have been adopted by a humming bird who built her nest on my wind chimes and now there are 2 eggs in it.

Talking about taking time to smell the roses....

This humming bird has had a very positive effect on me and my family and I wanted to share these photos

Hey Boomer, that's the way I feel about it.
This has been an amazing thing to be part of.
We became friends... we got to know each other.
She would hover about 2 feet from my face at eye contact and I would talk to her in a soft calm voice. That went on for a a couple of days.
Then she started building her nest.
It took her about a week.
I wish I would have started a photo journal of the building of the nest.
In any event she is very cool.... even my cat is acting like a loving parent.
thanks for the support and I will give updates

Re: I have been adopted by a humming bird mommy

hummingbirds are excellent!!! so vibrant and alive. plus they help pollenate flowers. i love watching them.

if you don't have any hummingbird feeders, you should set some up. don't use the crappy hummingbird food you can buy in boxes, you can make your own by boiling water and sugar (recipies online). planting flowers to attract them and as a food source are great as well! enjoy your new bird family!!!

I've heard to leave out any coloring, just in case it has bad chemicals. I don't use it in my feeders and they are feeding here all the time.

This is just way cool.

Re: I have been adopted by a humming bird mommy

Truly awesome! Try to get pic's of the babies when they come.

I miss having the Blue jays nesting in the trees around my house. When I first moved in I would leave food out and I became quite the popular spot, then I realized bears like bird food too. Ever had a 500 lbs bear staring you down from the otherside of a sliding glass door? It was surprisingly unpleasant, dog's didn't seem to like it much either. Probably why you got those beautiful humming birds, they are smart enough to stay out of the mountains!

Thumbs up Re: I have been adopted by a humming bird mommy

We love Humming Birds and before moving had one who nested outside our front door too. Very special to watch them grow and take wing for the first time.

We still have our feeder, but no nests yet.

It isn't often we have more than one Humming Bird feeding at the same time as they are very territorial, but seeing the varieties/colors is fun

Thanks for posting these pictures. I was a pretty avid birdwatcher back east but never had the good luck to attract hummingbirds. (did have a beautiful swallow family in one of my nesting boxes though)

Color me jealous. I miss attracting birds to the yard (cuz now I don't have a yard )

OMG she has like 50 feeders. She's feeding her whole neighborhood. Course, she has them all year, we are too cold up here in Nor Cal. They have been back here for about a month though.

Here are some of mine on a summer evening. FM

Too cool! I have a few that are 'residents', they are soo much fun to watch :)

Yes to the food mix, sugar/water is the best. Here is a simple recipe i found/use: Hummingbird Food

Has the second egg hatched? Great job with the photos!

LocalBud, I would like to share a beautiful quote with you.

'When something as magical as this happens between man and animal, Native Americans say, 'We have walked together in the shadow of a rainbow.' - unknown

You are truly blessed. Thanks for sharing with us.

Re: I have been adopted by a humming bird mommy

Just got this in my email (thank you sister friend) and had to share it.

(The egg is smaller than a tic tac!--)

THE BIRTH OF A HUMMINGBIRD---amazing!.

Be sure to click on NEXT PAGE at the bottom of each page; there are 5
pages in all. A lady found a hummingbird nest and got pictures all the way
from the egg to leaving the nest. It took 24 days from birth to flight.

Because you'll probably never in your lifetime see this again, enjoy; and please share.
