so i woke up this morning to this really dirty, burr covered dog sitting on the porch. i think its some kind of like part st bernard, part lab mix, cause its big and yellow and drools a lot, but its really friendly. it doesnt have any tags or collar, maybe it did at one point and it got lost in the woods, i dont know. what should i do? just let it hang out outside all day and see what happens? it seems to like it here since we gave it some water and food. its obviously somebodies pet, its just been shaved for the summer you can tell that it had some seriously long hair. the problem is my neighbors and few and far between so i have no idea which side of the canyon this dog might have come from.. i checked several missing pet websites to see if maybe he had been missing for awhile, no luck. i checked the local neigborhood website, no luck (mainly because nobody has posted on it in like a year). humm.. what to do.. what to do..

is tehre anyway to tell if its got a microchip without actually scanning it? can you feel the chip under the skin?

maybe a local rescue unit, not the city, but some other organization, like hounds of love or rascal resue..?!?

it's usually in the nap of the neck, what the heck is nap..?!? it sounded good..?!? base of the neck....

No, the microchips are smaller than a grain of rice. At least my cat's was.

Go to that bulletin board at the grocery stop and post a flier. Someone will see it.

Does he bother the great dane? What does B do?

Take the dog to an animal shelter and if the dog has a chip they will contact the doggies owner. You can ask for info on the dog too if you would like to call and check up on the dog.

You can take the dog to animal control for your area and have him scanned. Then you can take the dog with you, leave animal control your info and if and when the owners call, animal control will let you know. I have done this before with a lost dog. If you give the dog to animal control the clock starts ticking on euthanizing....

Your vet or any vet will also scan a lost pet for you....

Looks' like you might have yourself a new Buddy!
Dogs' get lost in the woods' here quite frequently. I think MRTs' idea of the local stores' bulletin board is a good idea & look around for flyers of missing dogs'. Local newspaper, as you noticed, neighbors' prolly not going to Craigs' list. LOL!

I agree with tokermom! How do you feel about the situation (not think, but feel)? I would post a notice and if at all practical keep him/her until owners show up or she/he grows on you. Everything happens for a reason. This dog did not show up by accident.

Take care and give 'em a scratch behind the ear for me!

update..

took the dog to the shelter.. turns out he had a microchip and the people who lost him had already called looking for him. so he should probably by now have been picked up by his owners. mission accomplished.

oh and the dog was a great pyranesse, not some kind of drooling mut like i thought :)

You did good, weedtracker.

I've heard you should take a found pet to the local shelter right away.
Not only might the pet have the chip, but most owners check the shelters within the first 24 hours.

Besides you can always ask for "first rights" or whatever it is they call it,
where they will call you before destroying the dog.

A shaved Great Pyrenees must be pretty funny looking!
