Rep Power: 145656 | Annabelle, my 6 year old pitbull girl diagnosed with cancer today. She has had a lump growing below her ear for a few weeks now, took her to the vet today and it was pure cancer cells. Got it removed and sent to a lab to be tested so we can find out what type of cancer it is, and develop a treatment plan. She is an absolute sweetie, even though she spent most of her life in an abusive home. Her tail is so strong from wagging it is almost a weapon now, when I first adopted her a little over a year ago it was limp, my vet (who called me to adopt her when her previous parents wanted her put to sleep cause they were tired of her, "Too much energy" They thought...assholes), said she almost never saw Annie's tail wag. Now it never stops. Except for today, she is obviously in pain after the surgery, her tail is tucked and she is just laying at my feet and whimpering. She perks up when I pet her, so probably going to spend the rest of the day just sitting next to her and giving her lot's of love. My bulldog Chase's hurt eye, and the pitty-puppy Rachel's fight injuries (both attacked by stray dogs while we were on walks) are nothing compared to this. They are already basically better, but I don't know about Annabelle. She will have he best care possible, (got her pet insurance, and my Mom is loaning me whatever I need till the insurance can reimburse, thankfully. Mommys are the bestest...) but cancer.....it's not fair. She is so young, and just now starting to have a happy life, with a great pack that loves her, all 4 get along like family, no fights ever, they even share food they are so good...right now the other 3 younger dogs are laying next to her in a big pile...it's not fair. This literally makes my heart hurt. I adopted Annie after, having to put to sleep a beautiful 3 month old puppy because even with the best round the clock vet care, and my own hand feeding for weeks, she just could not beat the distemper, she beat the parvo, and she tries but she just didn't have enough left to beat the distemper - she came from the Lancaster pound with parvo/distemper, I had her a little over one week before symptoms began showing. I was so unbelievably sad after putting the puppy down, but when I met Annie we immediately bonded, just having Annie in the room makes everything happier. even friends who don't like dog's, and think pitbulls are dangerous, think Annabelle is an absolute dream. Everybody loves her, and says she is the best dog ever. She's just nothing but joy. Now this, I just don't even know how to deal with it, just feel powerless and sad. Have lot's of work to do, but I just can't get motivated...love her so much. Last edited by cephas; 08-25-2009 at 07:16 PM.. |

Rep Power: 145656 | Re: Annabelle, my 6 year old pitbull girl diagnosed with cancer today. Thanks everybody. Part of me feel like I'm overreacting, it's not like she will be gone tomorrow, but she's only 6. I have really been looking forward to having many happy years of watching her mature and grow old before dealing with any thing like this you know. Maybe it is just selfish, but I feel like I already lost knowing her as a puppy (vet gave me pics though, she was a cutie), I don't want to lose knowing her as an old lady... Anyways, I'm doing research on diets and things like that....she will still have the longest happiest life possible, that is what I'm trying to concentrate on now. It's just hard to think of that when she whimpers. She is a big, tough pitbull. When she tore her ACL just 6 months ago (yeah...I know...) she yelped, but never whimpered. The vet told me she went in deep to make sure and get the entier lump, since it was at the outside base of the ear, I'm guessing the area is super sensitive and she is hurting really bad right now. One thing I am very glad about, my vet is the only vet up here and she has been seeing Annabelle since she was an 8 week old puppy (That's why she refused to put her to sleep, instead she took Annie - had the other guy fill out paperwork - and called me). Her and her entire staff love Annie as much as their own dogs (when I board Annabelle overnight, they take turns bringing her home for the night, they are never too full for Annie, and her pack...I think that's awesome), so I have no doubt once we know exactly what type of cancer we are dealing with, everything will be done to keep her healthy and happy. They even use Annie's picture on the postcards they send out... |

You know, we as humans now use cannnabis as a cancer fighting agent, I'm NOT saying blow smoke in your dogs face, but why arent vets looking into cannabanoids for animal cancer treatment? or are they? |

I have a friend with a pitbull.. actually my uncle and my friend and they've had cancerous growths on them since they were about 7 years old. Most vets will tell you it's common with pit bulls and not to worry tooooo much. Those two dogs I just mentioned are going on almsost 11 now. Vets will tell you to be selectivce... their are some growths that your going to have to remove $$$ and some won't be a problem. In the long run I'd say you're prolly going to have alot more time with your dog! -miah | |

She has full right to all couches and beds, sometimes we even help her up. The connection between my pets and daughter is unbelivable! pit's are the most loving dogs they rarely leave eachothers side. Anyway... I hope she pulls through soon! if she's not eating try pouring some bacon fat over her food. Always works! DOG VERSION OF CHICKEN SOUP! |

She sounds like a very sweet dog and she's so lucky to have such a wonderful and loving family to support her during her illness. I lost my 11 year old cat to cancer five years ago, I held her while she went to sleep that last time. It's one of the hardest things there is. I'll be thinking good thoughts for Annie and her family. |

Rep Power: 145656 | Re: Annabelle, my 6 year old pitbull girl diagnosed with cancer today. Got my vote too! I found out a few days ago the lump was a form of melanoma, so skin cancer...makes sense since she spent most of her like on a deck with no shade or protection from the sun, and she is a red nose...which means she sun burns easy....man I hate that guy, see him around town a lot too..sucks... Anway, we'v done a bunch of tests, found one other very small spot that got removed, and now she seems to be clear. I'll be keeping out of the sun for the most part, not hard sense she loves her spot on the couch more than anything in the world (yes, I know I spoil them...), and feeding her a very healthy diet to keep her immune system strong, etc... It's a big relief for me, I haven't been able to concentrate on anything, this has been the only thing that matters you know? Now she just has to wait a little while to get the stitches out before she is 100%, but already she is doing much better, losing weight (she wasn't eating much before, but was still plumping up somehow), and the ear goop/nastiness build up she has been having has also seems to have cleared up so happy days!!!!! Thanks for all the support again, freaking love trackers!!!!!! |

Rep Power: 5379 | Re: Annabelle, my 6 year old pitbull girl diagnosed with cancer today. My lab/husky is going on 11 and covered in lumps. I've taken him to the vet every time a new one pops up and the vet just chocks it up to lab-lumps... I guess labs are known for fatty cysts (lymphomas). My neighbor just had to put his husky down because a similar, but very large lymphoma had developed within his chest cavity and was causing him a great deal of pain. Being that my dog is 1/2 husky, with a huge chest and a ton of lab-lumps, I fear something similar. Cephas, I cant tell you how glad I am to hear your dogs gonna be ok. There is nothing better in the world than a good, happy, and healthy dog. |
