I am 3 days short of my one month free from cigarettes. I smoked for over 24 years. This is my first real attempt to quit.

Re: When Did You Quit Smoking Cigarettes?

Good luck on the rest of your life. I will have two years free July 4th. You will notice things smell better, including yourself, taste better, and breathe better. Then another great perk is that you will have extra dinero to spend on something you really want or need.

I smoked my very last cigarette May 24, 2005 on the way to the hospital. I almost suffocated due to pneumonia and could not get a full breath of air.
I puffed away for 43 years and I was at 3 packs a day.
I also keep the last pack of cigarettes I opened and it is hanging on my wall as a reminder.
Quitting seems a little easier if you choose life over tobacco.

Re: When Did You Quit Smoking Cigarettes?

I too quit after 24 years ... I have no clue as to how long it's been, five maybe six years now, it's not important to me anymore as there is no place whatsoever in my life for tobacco of any sort.
One day to the next ... Cold Turkey as they call it, the first three days sucked as it leached out of my body, but once it was gone all the rest was just in my head and I was going to be damned if I couldn't psyche myself into a healthy lifestyle again.

Graehstone says..I come into the peace of wild things …

For a time I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

A year ago I made it my new years resolution. Made it past the year mark and don't really think about it much anymore.

Re: When Did You Quit Smoking Cigarettes?

I quit years ago....but I still remember how hard it was. It was about the third or fourth day and I woke up...then thought, why get out of bed....I don't smoke anymore. I dreamed for two or three years that I'd be smoking a cig.... I actually kept cigs around...would play with them while talking on the phone...or after dinner. I just wouldn't light it. For me it was the a actual nicotine addiction, but also all the social aspects that went with it. It was weeks before I felt *comfortable*....without them.

But if you can make it past those initial days....DON'T GO BACK...do whatever it takes.

Love and peace

I quit in Sept in 1969. Smokes were expensive and I needed new guitar strings. A month or so of creative fasting did the trick. You don't want to smoke when you fast.

I quit in the same manner, however, its been about 15 years for me.

At the time that I stopped, I was smoking 2 packs of Camel Filters, softpack, after I had smoked Camel regulars for a long time.

I was getting real sick of the taste, lingering cloud of smoke around me and the synergistic effect in which the tobbacco has in combination with cannabis.

So one morning afterI spent the night at some friend's house...We all went to the garage for our morning weedies and cigarettes. I had one short of a full pack and had the thought that I was completely burnt on smoking. I put the cigarette back and tossed my pack to my buddie's uncle. I told him to keep 'em 'cause I'm done. He laughed and tossed 'em back. I returned the volley and let them know that i was completely serious.

I haven't touched one since. Even when friends ask me to hold their lit smoke while they do something, I refuse to have that tainted scent on my fingers anymore.

Everybody that I have ever spoken to in regard to not smoking anymore, has reiderated the same type of experience where you just basically have to be completely sick of it. Not to mention, most people that i know has never had a great experience with things such as, "The Patch".

When you do stop, you will wonder why it took so long to make the decision. Especially when you are around smokers and you get a whiff of the cloud that surrounded you when you did smoke.

:smile2: Had to smile at that. One of the reasons I quit in '74 is because the price went up to 45 cents and I thought that was outrageous. My shrink said "I'd really be pissed off today"

About 24 years ago. I finally decided that those loser tobacco companies are not going to get rich off my stupid ass. Also chicks don't generally dig it, and 24 years ago that was a big ticket item for me.

5 years this past New Years Eve for me!

It was around the time I realized that the tobacco industry is a huuuuge enemy of our community. They would hate to see us prosper! That made it easy to quit!

Re: When Did You Quit Smoking Cigarettes?

I quit when I was 20, that lasted about 5 years.
I quit when I was 31, that lasted 3 years.
I quit when I was 36, that lasted 1 year.
I quit when I was 40, and I still haven't had a smoke......

It's been 1 solid year since I've quit. This time it's for good.
