Rep Power: 14 | It's been about 2 years since I quit a habit that consumed 2-3 packs daily. Of course I'm glad I quit, and I feel, look and perform better as a result. Please feel free to share your issues with tobacco smoking. Wanted to recommend the method I used, hope it works for other folks... I read the book by Allen Carr (The Easy Way to Stop Smoking) and smoked my last ciggy as I turned the last page, lol. That's one of his tricks...he invites you to continue smoking all you care to while reading the book. Bottom line: it worked exactly as advertised (for ME, your mileage may vary). I studied up for weeks before quitting, there are LOTS of resources out there to help people stop...much of it free and valuable, and much of it very expensive and possibly not so great. I'm not saying you gotta stop (that little voice inside you, like a child who loves and needs your care, is the one begging you). http://groups.google.com/group/alt.q...t/topics?hl=en http://groups.google.com/group/alt.s...g/topics?hl=en Quit Smoking All Together with QuitNet.com - Stop Smoking Help and Cessation Support Smoking Cessation Support - American Lung Association site http://www.whyquit.com/ Now here's the dicey part...I don't want to dis anyone else's struggle with the bad weed, or discredit your experience of addiction. But the gist of this book, and the AH-HA! experience I enjoyed by reading it, is that tobacco isn't really all that addictive, the withdrawl symptoms are mild and quitting was pain free. There is a HUGE industry built around perpetuating the belief that smoking cessation is always difficult, that we should expect failure, and we need crutches to get through the agony. I call bullshit. For those of you who can't help but believe quitting is way hard, based on your own previous efforts or those of loved ones...I hear you. And you might call bullshit yourself when you start reading this book, lol...because the book will slowly establish that: * the physical addiction of tobacco is mild, and is completely absent within 2 weeks. * the physical cravings of tobacco withdrawl are also mild, similar to the discomfort of hunger after missing a meal (or two, lol). After the first day or two...those are also greatly diminished. * you don't really enjoy tobacco! It's sneaky that he let's you smoke while you're reading...because the proof is in the puffing. So yeah, it's brainwashing, but it worked for me. The guy is no writer, and his method involves a lot of repetition and some corny annecdotes from his life in postwar England. But hell, even the New Testament has some filler in it, lol. You could finish the book in a single sitting, but you might want to milk it out over a couple days...cuz when you finish reading, you stop smoking...tobacco. Rep Power: 0 | Re: I quit smoking...tobacco Good for you. Four months ago (I think it was 4) I up and quit. Watched a friend pass and I just did it. Turned out it wasn't that hard. My trick? I made a promise to God. That pretty much sealed my fate. Although, once a month or so I still sneak a cig. And I can do it without the need to buy a pack. That's still quit, isn't it? - |

| Re: I quit smoking...tobacco Congrats. I quit 3 1/2 years ago, cold turkey. The first few days were the toughest, but after that no problem. The thought of having a cig sounds good now and then, but it's a fleeting thought. I wish I could smoke just once in awhile, but I'm afraid I'll just start the nasty habit again. |

They say it takes 48 hours to get nicotine out of your system and for those hours it is toughest for the quitting smoker. Captain, you are remarkable to be able to have one every now and then, cause the vast majority of us would fall right back in the hole if we did. In my later years I have become such an anti-smoking zealot that the smell sickens me, and I would honestly rather smell someones fart than their cig. Keep up the quitting, and sub a joint of leafy shake for the cig (my humble advice).

My grandma has told me about this pill that she took to quit smoking.. and it cuts all cravings and even goes the extra mile to make you feel sick if you were to smoke a cig! im plannin on tryin it! although.... i smoke when im deathly ill.. so chances are.. even if i feel sick to my stomach.. ill still smoke.. oi vey! many props to those who have quit though! as "mild" as the cravings and withdrawls are.. for many it feels like a whirlwind of doom! and if anyone sets foot in the circumference of that crazy whilrwind.. you're in for it!! crazy female dog would probably be the best way to describe most woman trying to quit.. and well.. men tend to act that way as well =P has anyone tried replacing cigs for joints? and had that work for them??! ~TCG good luck with all of your endeavors!

The weird thing is that I stopped smoking marijuana about 15 years ago right around the time I began slowly taking up the cigarette habit. Once I was a confirmed smoker and an old friend wanted to toke, I got a bad reaction - kind of like the nausea that cigarettes cause before you become accustomed / addicted to them. Coming back to medical marijuana coincided with my quitting tobacco - it was part of a "campaign" to improve my health (through diet, exercise and medication). But when I began to puff MMJ I definitely realized that the physical act of smoking was relaxing, irrespective of *what* you're smoking. Here's the deal (from my experience)- * smoking marijuana is *ok* after you quit cigarettes, a little risky relapse-wise, but nicotene free. The book also says marijuana is not in itself a problem. * much of the perceived "relaxing" qualities of cigarette smoking were simply that you indeed *are* taking a break, kicking back. Deep inhale and exhaling is a natural way to relax and refresh. Yoga breathing exercises are an excellent substitute! No medicine delivered, but oxygenating and removing carbon dioxide is heady, lol. After I quit ciggies I kind of missed standing out on my patio all the time, hanging out with other smokers, and the whole "fuck the world" outsider pose though, lol. * hugest part of the Quitting dilemma is psychological. As Shakespeare said "nothing is but thinking makes it so." Doesn't make it any easier, but it *does* make it simpler. Helps to have friends who are allies, and MMJ can definitely help too, imho.

But I still stand out on the porch with all my smoker friends. I don't feel out of place hangin out w/ smokers, and I have no desire to pick up a cigarette and smoke one. In fact I have almost always lived w/ smokers, and have not had a cigarette in years. |

Instead I'll just hassle you and yammer (my usual method). 1. Study up, have a plan (plan A,B and C even). Setting a date, being determined, and announcing your intention are all powerful. But what if... 2. Have a method, any method. "Don't think of an elephant" is the hardest thing to do. Thinking about every animal you can name is much easier. 3. Consider having SOME kind of substitute for your mouth and fingers (gum, carrot sticks, hey get some elaborate piercings :sparkly smirk:) 4. Prepare to ignore all the ig'nant voodoo wiggers will cast your way: like, arent' you worried about getting fat, or I've tried a million times but can't quit. Even the sincere best wishes can get in your way...this is all about YOU baby, don't allow anyone else to discourage, reroute or cause you a single misstep. Don't do it for someone else, don't promise anyone else you'll quit, don't form an agreement to quit with somebody else. 5. If it helps you, DO ask for others to support you, DO use internet support / discussion groups. Good luck, persevere!

Rep Power: 63 | Re: I quit smoking...tobacco You know, it just gets to the point to where you are so fucking sick of it. I hated each cigarrette as much as I loved it. I wanted to smoke it as bad as I didn't want to smoke it. Through the years each cigarrette started tasting more and more like shit. And seriously, I loved smoking, never thought I would quit. You can only take so much of that nasty ass shit. Now whenever I feel like smoking a cig, I just smoke some wacky tobaccy instead, and all is good. Weed, is all I need. I smoked a cig for the first time in 4 months with my cousin a couple weeks ago. We were drinking, and you know how that shit goes. So I had one, and I got so fuckin sick... I will never have another ciggarrette again. Waste of time, waste of money and most importantly, the addiction was slowly wasting my soul away... Glad it's all over and done with. For those of you still struggling with addiction, I feel for ya... May you stay strong. Where there's a will, there's a way baby. Remember that. Peace and Love Yo |
