eggplant

o shapely teardrop, smooth of peel and shine
thy purple gleaming skin a satin sigh
recalling deepsea hues amid the brine
or starless indigo of the night sky

thy moonlit innards, soft and coolly pale
content to glow more quietly than most
to let a more insistent spice prevail
thou understated, underspoken host

may brief pretenders cause you no alarm
thou matchless stalwart: rise above the fray
no cheeky ramps or sunchokes have such charm
thy aubergine-ius ever will hold sway.

there is no measure of a pure nirvana
beyond perfection wrapped in parmigiana.

How do I eat thee? Let me count the ways
Thou cakey crumbly tube of pure delight
Beslathered with thy chocolate-aping glaze
And hiding in thy midst a swirl of white

Should I thy sacred helix pull apart
Like to a precious rug, thence to unroll
And when I reach thy viscous icing heart
With passion savor, or devour it whole?

Or should thy fragile, flaky skin delight
To fall away, no spongy cloud to spoil,
And thus denuded, suffer to a bite
Of gentle chocolate and its palest coil?

Alas, with little patience for such grace,
I simply stuff the thing inside my face.
