Hi all. I was wondering why we use mmj. Me for example, I've been using mj for about 20 years now.

I was introduced to mj by my friends and of course they were pinching their parents stash. Hehe. Anyways, over the years I've been smoking I never realizing that I was medicating myself. First of all, let me tell you I'm pretty high strung, basically bi-polar. I would get angry at things for no apparent reason, but after I smoke everything just seems to be alright and normal again, and I'm able to deal with situations like a normal human being. I'm still kind of high strung but not as bad as when I was younger since I know how to deal with my issues. All I know and can say is that mmj has drastically changed my life for the better.

So... I just want to know why some of you are using mmj- just out of curiosity.

I use it for the same reason as the forum you posted this in, pain management. I have had a bad back all my life. I used to have to go see a chiropractor a few times a month when i was a 4th grader. After a year or so my family couldnt afford to send me anymore so ive been forced to just deal with it. I started smoking marijuana when i was about 14. It wasnt untill i was around 16 or 17 that i realized it actually helped me with the pain. Now im 24 and still living with the pain. Although the pain is much worse and i have to smoke much more.

Anxiety. I am now free of all the harmful meds my Drs had me on.

I have a tumor the size of my thumb imbedded in my spinal cord. So pain mangement is my reasoning also. Depression is also present along with nasua (how the hell do you spell that word) from my pharmaceutcals (can't freakin spell that one either).

I also have been a user since '75 which at that time was for fun. We discovered the tumor in '76 so I have pretty much been medicating for 32 years (i am 48).

I herniated two discs and the surgery to fix it failed. I got tired of all the side effects and addiction from the RX pain meds... so here I am.

I have severe insomnia, most likely from 20+ years of touring as a musician. Constant travel and erratic schedules will do that to you. I basically have no sleep cycle to speak of, and if I don't medicate, may not sleep more than 1 hour in 48. Most of the time, without meds, I can sleep maybe 2 hours at a time, and then will wake up and not be able to go back to sleep for 3-4 hours. You can imagine what that does to you if you are trying to work. Sleep deprivation causes significant mental and emotional aberrations.

In addition, I am being treated for a chronic rotator cuff inflammation, and use cannabis for that as well. I have not taken perscription meds, either Vicodin or Ambien or any of the rest, for over 2 years.

I started smoking cannabis around 1965, and have used it off and on since. Getting my rec was a revelation, and I have experienced significant benefits. My hair actually turned from mostly gray, back to mostly brown. My doc says it is from having my stress level greatly reduced....

Although I do not benefit from it as greatly as others do, I still benefit from it. lol
I have found that medical cannabis allows me to fall asleep within minutes instead of lying in bed for 2-3 hours trying to clear my mind and fall asleep. I use it for any inflammation and pains throughout my body. I usually have back pains. My main use for it is for my headaches. I have not seen another medicine that can get rid of one within seconds. :)

I'm also bi-polar (rapid cycle). Like you I did not know that smoking was self medicating. I started @ 16 in boarding school b/c I could not sleep for days(2 or 3 @ times). Then when I thought there was no hope and thought I was going to go insane, My roommate who had being trying to get me to smoke for a year and half stopped asking and I got curious, It was always around since he dealt to the rest of the boarders and asked if I could try it. NL#5 from New Hampshire in 1996 was shocker to me a was so high I got scared after 4 hours b/c it would not die down. Anyways 12 years later here I am feeling blessed by Godhead. No pills, No problems.

I have been useing MMJ because of my MIGRAINES! Ive had them ever since i was 8.I got immune to the pills they were giving me and they didnt help after while. I started to smoke when i was 18 im 27 now, but not medically untill i was 21. Im not gonna say it makes the headaches dissapear but it sure makes it easier to cope with.

I've been smoking MJ since the sixties. It's the only way I can manage my depression. Also, as I've aged, it has helped with my lower back and joint pain.

I work construction so I've got ALOT of aches and pains so I use for that as well as stress relief...I've got ALOT of that too.My wife uses for anxiety amongst along list of other things.

I use it because my kidneys failed, and it helps me with nauesa, maintaining my weight, insommia and depression. And it does a better job then the prescription medicines they have given me over the years.

great thread and great replies. Im glad to see that you guys benefit from it. It get's tiring reading threads from the others who just bitch about prices and call it "compassion". The sad part is a big percent of them are most likely guys who are broke young kids and adults who are healthy and just wants to get faded.

I understand that prices can be a bit too much for other people's budgets. I guess that's why sb420 allows you to grow your own plants.

Like many, I started young. I was thirteen when I first started smoking mj. (I started smoking cigarettes when I was 11.) I've had asthma since I was 3 and had to go to the emergency room many times as a kid (I know Iknow...I was a dumbass for smoking cigarettes), but my asthma got much better in my early teens. My family decided I was growing out of it. 25 years later I finally get my scrip after my second motorcycle accident. My first accident was a shattered femur, broken ankle, and broken rib. 11 years after that I broke six ribs and my collar bone. I've had friends with a scrip, but never wanted one because all my friends knew how big a stoner I was, and I didn't want them to think I was getting one as an excuse to get high legally. After the second wreck, I got home from the hospital and cut my pain meds in half by smoking mj. I realized that I was medicating with mj and I needed to do it legitimately in order to help the cause. Looking back, I should have gotten my scrip ater my first wreck...then I'd have been able to enjoy the shops that USED to be here in Bako. They were closed down about 8 months before I got my scrip

Well, I could simply say "chronic pain management" but that doesn't cover all the reasons.

Like others I began smoking long ago and found the additional medicating effects. I ahd a very physical career and played sports, so I had numerous minor injuries.

I became "disabled" after two surgeries on my spine/neck...

I had stopped smoking due to career opportunities and chose standard prescription pain pills for over 10 years, but they were not effective and due to the lack of flexability, I was either a wasted mass of humanity,unable to accomplish basic tasks, or in much pain...

As the pills became less effective I added alcohol.

Naturally, not the healthiest choice, but in my chosen field, the "acceptable" option.

When my situation changed and that career ended I investigated the legal use of MMJ, found it much more flexable and the effects less debilitating.

It keeps my muscle spasms down when used daily and helps me sleep.

I have three vertibrae in my neck that still move, so sleep positions are very restricted. When I awaken in the middle of the night I can medicate and return to sleep.

If I was taking the prescription pills I would be under the influence for 12 hours, so taking a pill at 3 am... I would be useless untill about 3 pm that afternoon...

Although "disabled" I do still have many duties requiring my attention and MMJ allows me to medicate as needed and still accomplish goals like my work outs at the gym to restore as much physical balance as I can, maintain what I have remaining and loose weight too.

To maintain stasis (relaxed spasms) I do medicate every few hours as needed and if possible, I add a concentrate at night before bed.

Anxiety Disorder and Depression Disorder. I used to dread little things such as Going to work, Hanging out with a lot of people, Going to school because I would have such bad anxiety attacks when I was a round a lot of people.. Since medicinal, I no longer dread such little things as hanging out with a bunch of friends and having a good time.. It's changed My Life for the better and i'm so Thankful.

I have fibromyalgia and all the perks that come with it...lol

Widespread pain and neouropothy.
Partial paralysis on left side from neck down.

Severe nausea in the am.

Migraines at night.

Anxiety and depression.

I am also a mother of a very active autistic 5 year old son.

Hard to find a balance with all of this going on.

Need to find a job I can do that doesn't cause more problems.
