The OTHER musician who died Thursday: Sky Saxon

03:42 PM PT, Jun 26 2009

The Seeds' lead singer and founder, Sky Saxon, died in Austin on Thursday morning of what his publicist said was an "undiagnosed infection of his internal organs."

Formed in 1965 in Southern California, The Seeds had one big single -- "Pushin' Too Hard" -- which was a Top 40 hit in 1967. The song combines the urgency of garage rock with a dose of psychedelia and anti-establishment lyrics. No wonder it was popular.

After The Seeds broke up in 1969, Saxon joined The Source Family commune. He lived in Hawaii for a time but in recent years had returned to Southern California. Saxon, whose birth date was reported differently by various sources, was believed to be in his 60s.

Up until the end, Saxon was a performing musician, with a new band, Shapes Have Fangs, and plans to tour this summer.
