Migraine Support Group/Get Together

A few days ago I saw something that explained that serious migraine patients are said to have a lower quality of life - on average - than people with other diseases considered much more serious: cancers, immune deficiencies, etc.

So why are MMJ patients with other diseases getting together to talk, share knowledge, and support each other when we aren't? At least in SD we aren't. There are a few migraine support groups, but with questionable MMJ friendliness.

If nothing else, it's a venue for people to medicate and share good vibes. It seems that migraines, as a disease, are hard to empathize with unless you have experienced them personally. For me, and I would assume other migraine patients, this lack of understanding from others (the doubtful employer or teacher, the skeptical looks when your reason for absence is a migraine) is draining.

It's just an idea. Maybe a monthly get together at a MMJ friendly location, share some insight, eat some food, hangout... I dunno. The first step is to find out whether anyone else would want to participate.

Let me know what you think.

I get migraines. Haven't had one (KNOCKING ON WOOD) in a few months, but when I don't have the migraines I simply have an awesome headache. I am prone to them and have been getting them all of my life.

I'm open to hear more. I've not actually had any strain ease the pain of my migraine because I usually run for the Relpax or Imitrix. I would like to learn what strains are actually useful for this problem.

I am interested. Peace!

Careful with those pain pills. Before I got a prescription for migraine medications (had to fight tooth and nail, they told me mine weren't migraines, but the migraine medication made them go away?????) it was nothing for me to down 10-12 200mg ibuprofen at one time only to continue to suffer. I was not in the know about Vicodin, but when I learned about it I found that this did not help either. I can take 3 at one time and all I get is hot. Hot with a pounding headache is no fun.

I am now sitting her dealing with gastric problems and waiting for test results for the full 411 and I do believe that the ibuprofen was definitely to blame. Yes I know I should not have taken that much, but when you are in pain sometimes you get desperate. In the past I never thought about trying marijuana for the pain because I was wishing for a quick beheading. Now I am trying to find the proper strain to deal with them and I think I am moving in the right direction with a lot of help for those on this board.

Thank you everyone. Take care!

I used to take 3 150 mg phenobarbital and 2 2o mg percocet a day along with 125 mg of topamax and 120 mgs of calan, now thanks to pot, I only take the topamax and calan neither of which are narcartic. Sativas work the best for me throughout the day.

Ummm, Pheno, percocet I think I know but Topamax (anti-anxiety?) and calan I don't, but the question is:

How could you possibly function on that much medication???? Wow. Thank goodness you found some sativas to help. Much safer than many of the prescription meds we take as you know.

Peace!

Re: Migraine Support Group/Get Together

These headaches suck!
I have been enjoying med MJ for 5 years now and throughout I have taken Vicodin and percocet along with Valium and xanax for anxiety.

Went to a neurologist last week and even after telling him That when I first smoked my headaches have not been as strong or as frequent and I get a crazy migraine atleast a couple times a year. Explained that when I was in 4th grade I was already taking Motrin 800's and still being sent home with a headache. He had the nerve to say I need to quit smoking because he thinks I have a "transformed Migraine" Then he proceeded to prescribe a cycle of prednisone, Naproxen and Nortriptyline. I don't believe I will be going to him again, he was an older gentlemen and set in his ways. I have not had a completly dibilatating migraine in years, until now. It seems as though I have had a headache for a few months, some days it's mellow and some days it puts me to bed...If I am lucky enough to get sleep If don't sleep the next day is worse for me. Sativa's seem to help my headaches, weird right? They just allow me to keep going and a Nice heavy indica for night time.

Support group, I am down I am in San Diego aswell, is there any other interest? Shit, just to smoke with some other people who have experienced a headache like these, I know I am not a freak, but I too have been looked at weird when using a migraine as a reason to being sick or taking a day off. So SD peeps I am down.

Re: Migraine Support Group/Get Together

Diskrete, it looks like there isn't much interest so far. People are eager to share experiences and advice about migraines in here, but don't wanna kick-it in person. It's understandable: the transition from talking online to talking in person has been stigmatized in recent years and is intimidating (especially in SD among the MMJ community).

I was given similar advice by one neurologist, while another advised that I go with what works. Many neurologists will argue that they know how to treat migraines, but very few know how to troubleshoot the bad/persistent ones. When presented with a bad case, they revert either to speculative theory or the "go with what works" approach.

Self-advocacy is very important when it comes to migraines. You have to learn to say no to your doc or just go and find a new one.

Post Re: Migraine Support Group/Get Together

I've been dealing with migraines for a long time, and in my personal experience marijuana is a great aid. If I can catch a migraine when it's just starting to take effect, smoking really helps keep the pain at bay until I can do things that often work for me, like relax, eat something, drink water, and maybe take a couple pain relievers depending on the situation. Eating well and consistently, staying hydrated, getting enough sleep and avoiding major stress all help me keep migraines out of my daily life, but there's always ones you can't do anything about, and out of those there are some rare ones that are absolute torture. Marijuana works for me as a pain and nausea reliever and sleep aid in all but the worst, and most of the time I've experienced those I've felt there were things I could have done sooner to prevent the migraine from advancing so far along.

I can honestly say there have been times in the midst of a bad migraine that I packed a bowl, nauseated and doubting that marijuana could help my current condition the whole time. Then the hit tasted so unexpectedly natural and the relief came so fast that I was left amazed that anyone could think marijuana doesn't have legitimate medicinal value. Some people don't experience the same immediate relief, both for migraines and intense stomach pain and nausea, that I do. And I've certainly had powerful migraines that wouldn't even respond to stronger painkillers. But for the most part marijuana has been a superb aid, and sometimes surprisingly so, in situations I doubted it would help.

If you want to read about my migraine-related near death experience that led me to become a patient, go here.

I agree completely, before the meds and MMJ I have sent to the Emergency room twice before I was told I have a chemical inbalance. Just because one Dr. is saying one thing never means they're "right". It's trial and error. I find sativa dominate hybrids helps me the most.

Oh yea, that's one of the more common signs of a soon-to-be migraine. Most people will get them before the pain, I get it before, during, and after. Have you ever looked at a bright light and then looked away only to see a silhouette of the bright thing almost burned into your vision? Think about that, but covering everything you see... that's what mine are like. I can see stuff, but its almost like there's a cloud in front of everything. If you are lucky enough to consistently have them as a sign of oncoming pain, then that should be your indicator to medicate. The earlier you can catch it, the better.

I'm glad to hear that so many people rely on sativas for their migraines. I've been telling people that for years and many people have argued with me about it. A heavy sativa really works best for me.. The best thing I've ever smoked was a chocolate thai (not chocolope). If you can find it, buy it.

Sorry to hear about ur pain. I am A MIGRAINE SUFFERER AS WELL!!!! Thats y i have my REC. A solid INDICA helps for me,and if its to the point where flowers dont work, then ill add a lil concentrates on top or smoke it pure. Some HYBRIDS will help as well, because of the SATIVA in it,its able to hit ur head jus a lil and give u the heavy body effect at the same time ;)

Whoa!!! 6 Vicodin, you have to be careful!! I'm not sure exactly what you were prescribed, but the basic vicodin is 5mg of vicodin and 500mg of tylenol (5/500). In any given day you really shouldn't have more than 2000mg of tylenol, but I've heard people argue that up to 4000 is OK (new studies are showing that 2k is the max, but many old-schoolers say 4k). Keep in mind though, that this is over a 24hour period. You just put 3000mg of tylenol in yourself in a very short period of time... Your insides aren't happy with you.

Anyone who needs more than 2 normal vicodin at a time should consult their doctor to find out if a different mix would work better. There are other vocidins with less tylenol. The absolute best is vicoprofen which has ibuprofen instead of tylenol and the mix comes out to 7.5mg of vicodin to 200mg of tylenol (7.5/200)... you can get much more vicodin in you when you need it without the risk of liver damage and other terrible things.

Keep in mind that the higher the dose, the higher the risk of dependency... plus, both vicodin and ibuprofen can actually cause headaches so both can be counter-productive.

Sorry Weedtracker if I've talked about something I shouldn't, but this is important knowledge.

Re: Migraine Support Group/Get Together

Self-advocacy is extremely important especially as a migraine patient. Knowing dosages, concentrations, and potential side-effects is very important because many doctors wont tell you and wont do the math for you.

I remember when one of my family members went in for a very invasive surgery. I had to spend every waking moment in the hospital just to make sure the nurses didn't administer too much tylenol: the person was on vicodin and the nurses were trying to give tylenol additionally!! I added it up, and they would have given him over 6000mg a day. I had to stop a new nurse from doing this every shift change. These are the people who are supposed to protect us when were sick... but very few actually do. Inevitably, it becomes just a job for some health care workers and as a result, patients become dehumanized.

There are many exceptions to my cynical view of doctors: there are caring and thoughtful doctors out there, but you cant make that assumption. Part of being a self-advocate is being prepared to deal with even the most terrible doctors. It means asking questions, researching treatments, asking other patients, talking to multiple doctors, making suggestions, and most importantly being able to say no to you doctor.

I hear you, but I feel for markit. Vicodin does nothing for my migraines but the migraine meds do. When you are wishing for a guilliotine to end the pain 6 vicodin seems mild. Again, careful with the pain meds, think I've developed an ulcer from taking 1600mg ibuprofin at a time cuz the docs wouldn't listen to me.

Big hug to all of the migraine and headache sufferers. I truly empathize.

Re: Migraine Support Group/Get Together

I totally appreciate the concern, but I've had mgraines for 15 years and unfortionatly throughout the years I've built up a tolerance to pain meds, I'm NEVER on anything for more than the migraine lasts EVER, just want that out there. But to maybe calm your concern, if you read the beginning of my thread here my escape meds for migraines were a total of 450 mgs of phenobarbital and 40 mgs of percocet, my body may just process opiates differently, but at the time of a migraine I'm not concerned on how my liver is doing, even though I should be. That is why when a doctor hands me vicoden for a serious migraine I end up taking 6. Just oput of curiousity, do you suffer from migraines? I mean no offense, but by your statement it seems you dont understand the extent of pain involved during the time of a migraine, and my migraines, the series of ones I'm dealing with right now started in mid April. No I am not exagerating in anyway, they mellow a little from time to time but never go away. Desperation sometimes comes into play.

Re: Migraine Support Group/Get Together

Oh I know what you're talking about. I think you misunderstood the nature of my comment. I wasn't expressing concern about how much vicodin you took... I was concerned about the concentration of tylenol in that vicodin. Please dont assume that I dont know the extent of the pain involved in a migraine. I'm not on here sharing my what I've learned because my head kinda hurts sometimes. I share what I know because it comes from very painful experience.

Bad migraine days are bad migraine days... even those with low tolerances take high dosages to handle the pain. Take someone with a higher tolerance (you or I) and the doses can really get up there. I decided to put in my $0.02 because there are a few ways to medicate yourself with a high dose of pain-killer/muscle relaxant while minimizing the amount of tylenol taken at the same time, hence lowering your chance of liver damage.

It'd be a real shame to end up with migraines and serious liver damage.

Re: Migraine Support Group/Get Together

I know, stupid liver always gotta be a concern huh. yah I really do inbetween times when pain is tolerable to avoid anything, my go to is the advil, over the years the tylenol has eatin my tummy up already, it somtimes burns when I take it, signs of an ulcer maybe? eh who knows. I've gone into making alot of potent edible as of late, I mean potent , hell I figure if I gotta take a hand full of pills to aliveate the amount of pain I go through, then why the hell should I just not put my own baking talents to ues, so I have. I'll post some stuff up here later that works for me, again, I'm a chronic migraine sufferer so the recipies I'm gonna put up are potent, not to really be messed with and not to be under any circumstances be out in public after consumption, these are for the treatment of serious pain.

Re: Migraine Support Group/Get Together

Ok so some of these are kind of process, you'd have to start em ahead of time. Now I've been living with migraines for a loooong time and am kind of just used to doing everyday chores with them, if you can cook these up write em down and maybe someone else will. So, hashsicles, good for a hot day and a bad freaking migraine. Good quality hash is prefered, bad hash wont dissolve. So you need one of those 6 piece popsicle molds you get in the kid section at grocery stores, or small plastic cups, green tea bags, honey, hash. You only want to make enough to fill up the molds you have, so fill the molds with water then dump the water into the pot, make your tea as normal add a little extra honey, while the tea is brewing begin to crumble up your 3.5 grams of hash into small pieces, after tea has boiled remove from heat and add hash and stir constantly untill all hash has disolved, just a couple of minutes, add to popsice molds, add stick, and freeze, DO NO LET A CHILD TOUCH THESE! each popsicle will have about .38 grams of hash if it was stiired well and was crumbled good.
