Psychiatric Museum

Everybody needs to go to this museum and check out the website. It is right here in Los Angeles on Sunset Blvd. It is very informative and very scary for those on pyschotrpic drugs otherwise known as ZOLFT(sertraline), Paxil(paroxetine) etc. etc. etc...... I am currently studying in the Pharmacy field and this was one of our class projects. The information in this museum will upset many people. Check it out for yourselves and post your comments here to let me know how you feel and what you think. http://www.cchr.org/#/home

Isn't this the "museum" run by the Scientologists? Not exactly the most impartial take on Psychiatry.

Re: Psychiatric Museum

You guy's are right. It is funded by the Church of Scientology, so what... it is information. This Museum takes you back through out history and right up to present day. The history of Psychiatry and Psychology are undeniable. Both professsions have a very horrific past. If it wasn't for this organization, people taking psychotrpic drugs would have never known all the killer side effects of these drugs. All of these drugs are labeled in what is known as the black box. This is where all the side effects are listed, not just a few of them, all of them, including suicide and death. This organization helped push through this legislation to protect you and your children. Children are being drugged at an even younger age than ever before. Don't you think you should inform yourselves so you could make better decisions about your life and life of your children. It's just information, it won't harm you.

Re: Psychiatric Museum

The church of Scientology believes that all mental illness is caused
by an alien Xenu that has somehow invaded your psyche. They
believe that the solution to mental illness is the purging of the
alien Xenu.

This museum is just a front for them to find naive people that
they can convert to their religion.

Re: Psychiatric Museum

C'mon dude. Pretty much all pre-modern medical practices were scary. Psychiatry/Psychology are not exceptions. True, psychotropic drugs can have dangerous side effects. You can say the same for basically every drug, even OTCs. What the scientologists purposefully omit is the fact that there's a lot of seriously mentally ill people such as schitzophrenics (like my mom) who cannot function without anti-psychotic drugs.

If you're really into reading anti-psychiatry propaganda, I'd suggest reading Toxic Psychiatry by Peter Breggin. At least he has some legitimate points that don't revolve around Xenu. LOL.

Re: Psychiatric Museum

If you read what I posted in the first post I said it was a class project and I am studying Pharmacy. It is just information. Take it with a grain of salt. I'm not advocating anything, just thought someone with the need for more information would be interested. Don't worry, after I graduate I'll be dispensing drugs to all of you who wish to partake in the use of big pharma's money makers. Peace Out

It's kind of like if the Roman Catholic church funded a reproduction museum. I just question the impartiality of the information given by a museum that is part of Scientology (who have been openly anti-psychiatry since L Ron "stopped" writing science fiction).

If there is good information, so be it, just know the source and supplement with additional information.

Re: Psychiatric Museum

This is the kind of "information" that makes people go off their meds and end up in a really bad situation. Yeah, crazies have always been treated like dirt. At least doctors try to help them. I'm guessing the person posted this has never ended up in the ER hearing voices, having insomnia for days and days, so depressed you can't function, etc.
In this world, there is no miracle cure for mental illness. Whatever helps you and keeps you going is fine, so long as it doesn't badly damage your health. I've been on Zoloft on and off for 9 years. Yes, the side-effects are very bad, but I am not a burden on society, or in a nuthouse right now. Anyone who has chronic mental illness and who has seen their condition improve thanks to modern psychiatry, and I would be one of those, can tell you that this is a biased website full of false information. It is run by Scientologists, who apparently think our bodies are infected with tiny alien beings, so if you want an opinion from those folks, go to it.
BTW, marijuana and marijuana smokers have been demonized for a long, long time as well. People have said the same thing about MJ - it'll kill you, make your dick fall off, etc. SSRIs are far more dangerous than MJ, no doubt, but some of us aren't helped by anything else (except MJ).

Hey, don't let this "information" stop you from being a pharmacist - or whatever you want to be. Yes, the pharma companies are greedy and will sell bad meds if the FDA doesn't watch them like a hawk, but some of the meds are very helpful. You see all those people pushing carts and sleeping on the sidewalk? Some of them just went off their meds. "The Soloist" was a great movie about how our society treats the mentally ill. I smoke MJ for depression, but I take pills too. It all helps. Mental illness is extremely complex and tricky. Anything you can use to improve your condition should be considered. Going off your meds abruptly, like Tom Cruise advocates, is a truly stupid and dangerous thing to do. I know, I've tried it several times Even when I tapered slowly, I fell into the hole. If you can get through life without the pills, by all means do so. If you can't, take them and don't let the stigma get you down.

Well, lets do this... lets educate ourselves and be open and curious (opposite of naive) and let them do their worst. If you don't buy it, you don't buy it and you say, "ok, thanks but that doesn't work for me, have a nice day!" and leave. But being educated about certain topics is most helpful, Xeno or no Xeno. what do you think? have you been to this museum? i'd like to go, but i would really need to be in a certain (very unbiased and neutral) attitude and vibrational level in order to go. What do you think?
