I have a friend who is a medical marijuana patient and he recently smoked some strong bud or something, maybe it was hash, and went crazy. I'm not really sure of exactly what happened, but he checked into a mental rehabilitation center and i guess they say he can never smoke or use cannabis again because it triggered a mental disability that he has. He thought all of his friends were out to get him and he lost contact with all them for a few days, he cut his 4 month old plant at the stalk and tried to hide it. Hes a little better now, but i guess doctors say he cant smoke ever again.

I watched a documentary on pot recently, that claims that 1 out of 10,000 users have a negative reaction with pot that causes mental disorders or something like that. If anyone else has heard of anything like this happening to them or people they know let me know. Its a very strange situation that I'd like to hear more about from other patients.

From what I understand about it, a good amount of people experience schizophrenic episodes when smoking concentrates and some people in general trigger a disorder that the person may already have, just arent aware of it(most notably Schizophrenia, Bipolar, or even OCD). Hope this helps. My research has been collected from many sites and books over the years on mental disorders and cannabis.

Second, I'm not a doctor or anything, but my understanding is that the data on this subject is mixed and/or inconclusive. Some say that Cannabis can "trigger" mental disorders, such as schitzophrenia, in users who are already pre-disposed to such problems, genetically or otherwise. Conversely, some argue that this is merely another myth perpetuated by government propaganda and the like. Apparently, there's some evidence that suggests Cannabis can help people with ALL mental disorders.

So, it's basically a crap shoot. I do know from personal experiance that Indicas have occassionaly given me a "paranoid," unpleasent feeling. Also, very large doses of THC, consumed in a short duration, can cause symptoms similar to those of schitzophrenics. Either way, no one can tell your friend what's right for him--- not even so-called mental health professionals. I'm curious as to how old he is because the onset of schitzophrenia tends to be in the late teens or early 20s. If he's older than that, then he probably doesn't really have a disorder; he simply had a majorly bad trip. If you're worried that the same thing is going to happen to you, it's pretty unlikely. Hope this helps.

he must of just had a bad experience. i remember tripping crazy way back in high school that was 10 yrs ago but after the mmj wore off i was fine..... i ate some pizza had some soda and then walked home for bed time...
i have ADHD as well as OCD... mmj has help me in so many ways. just to calm my endless thinking brain, not to mention organizing my closet 800 times, and of course the cleaning obsession :cursing: hope your bud is doing better,

Naturally, sorry about your friend. There has been some great/useful stuff here which I thoroughly agree with. I agree that all drugs, when not properly and safely used or "street" drugs, often in connection with alcohol and or drug "cocktails" can trigger these types of reactions. Often (again as a layperson here and sharing my experience and research) the individual may have had warning signs prior to this episode. Perhaps, teachers, parents, friends may have had an indication that the individual had a personality shift. If you add psychedelics to the equation, all bets are off. (See Peter Green, Syd Barrett, Art Linkletter's daughter, etc.)

With respect to herb, I have never personally know anyone to have a total mental break the way you described. A brief, paranoid episode absolutely. Sativas, if the right strain, will do it to me. We always referred to it as "freaking out". The feeling really sucks.

My heart goes out to your friend and I will definitely keep him in my prayers.

ya doctors said that he had a pre-existing mental condition which was triggered threw cannabis. he had smoked lots of times before and was fine. hes never used anything outside of cannabis, so it couldnt be any other drugs. so it definetly changed my idea that cannabis really isnt completely harmless. although 1 out of 10,000 isnt a horrible statistic, its still something to think about.

Maybe the hash was cut or contaminated with some kind of solvent or chemical that caused his reaction. Did he know the source well?

I would question where your friend got his MMJ from. This doesn't sound like a MJ reaction. Too much MJ can make people paranoid and sometimes trigger an anxiety attack, but that is temporary. Sounds like your friend may have smoked some weed that had chemicals on it, fertilizers or things like PCP maybe.

I dont know what he smoked or what he has put in his body throught out his life or his genetic back ground but all this plays a part of our chemical make up. When the body is flooded with anything it reacts to protect it self. I hope that he will be alrite and find a way to properly keep his body in a balance.

I know, it's a terrible sort of feeling isn't it, having a friend go through something like this, and there's nothing you can do about it.

I had a friend who was totally chill one week, and then I come back the next week, and they shipped him home because he somehow developed schizophrenia. Of course, there's no real way to determine if it was the mmj that did it or if it was just his time (he's also in his early 20's).

I felt so bad when I heard about it, because I'll probably never see him again.

Whenever I hear a story like this, the first question that pops into my mind was, "what strain was it?"

A person who has a totally positive reaction to indica can have a totally negative reaction to sativa, and vice-versa.

Some ignorant mental health professionals don't know the difference. For them all marijuana is the same.

I would say get an evaluation by a psychiatrist who is really versed in medical marijuana.

^^ he's right on im bi-polar and only came to know i was by smoking some amber oil a while back and completely flipping out and my doc said certain events can trigger a previously unknown mental condition...

another thing that happens to me on occasion( nothing to do with bi-polar) is dizziness and what i was told was vertigo. it only occurs when ive consumed a bunch of caffeine and smoke a bunch of cigs combined with some really heady shit and i get lightheaded and dizzy...

Let's run through the logic here.
A. The patient has a mental health condition.
B. The patient is unaware of it.
C. Marijuana "triggers" it.

So marijuana is not the cause of the condition. Could it be possible that there are other "triggers"? Suppose that instead of smoking weed, the patient experienced loss of a job or loved one, or a tour of duty in Iraq? Couldn't those stresses be likely to "trigger" the condition too?

Could it even be that marijuana was a good thing, because the patient now seeks treatment for a condition he was previously unaware of?

I have had a similar situation myself much like the original poster of this threads friend. I first smoked at 17 years old and tried it a couple of other times from then till I was 18. Late in my 18th yr I really enjoyed MJ and smoked literally without miss everyday for the next 8 years. I mean I even would take a sneak a toke to work or vacation or even dodger games and would hit it whenever possible. MJ made me feel relaxed and warm-headed and I loved the smell and taste and the plant in general. MJ helped me cope with daily stresses and numbed me from famly pains and brighten my days. However, about one year ago, last August, I started experiencing some random really dark feelings of depression. Nothing sounded good to me whether surfing or watching tv or reading or going for a walk. I literally felt trapped inside my own head. I literally can't type words that express the level of uncomfortability I felt in my own head. Normally in the previous 8 years I could smoke a bowl and feel better, so I obviously tried smoking during these episodes one year ago. This time however, MJ only accentuated the negative feelings. I mean I went from feeling bad to feeling suicidal after smoking, I needed something to make the way I was feeling stop and after smoking I felt suicidal. I saw a DR who prescribed Cymbalta and Klonopins. The cymbalta helped minimally and really made me feel like a zombie so I stoped taking it, and the klonopins helped very much this last year. Now it's a year since then and I still feel mild episodes of the original anxiety/depression and haven't smoked anything this last year out of fear of triggering the full blown attacks, I can't go back there. Just recently I tried smoking again only to trigger the same horrible feelings as before, I just wanted off of the feeling it hurt my mind and soul. My girlfreind is still a daily smoker and if I even get any kind of second hand smoke from her session I feel horrible. I once told myself I would smoke forever and truly believed it, all my freinds thought so too as I was a fiend for MJ. But today that's all changed and not by personal choice. Im not blaming MJ for any of my feelings or triggering depression but it certaily made it worse or makes them worse. I am truly sad to have to part ways with the Green lady Jane but it's for the better for me for now. Hopefully one day we'll meet again. I just wanted to share my story in this thread sorry for the long post. - The dude abides.

It's mild PTSD.. Anyone ever do acid as a kid? I know folks that panic at the thought of acid.. It's a conditioned response. Like the guy above who feels horrible when his GF smokes.. Your brain automatically goes into freakout mode because it experienced a bad thing.. Really you cause it.. You relate MJ to giving you depression,anxiety,etcc..
I believe whole heartedly that MJ can bring out a mental condition you didn't realize you had. Look at alcholoics.. it makes some crazy.. underlying anger,sadness,etcc gets amplified.
There is a clinical name for getting anxiety/panic from preconceived thoughts.
It's a drug, treat it that way.
