Marijuana Alleviates Depression in Small Doses, But

Too Much Pot Could Do Opposite

Smoking a joint might act as an anti-depressant, but smoking five joints could be harmful. A McGill University study has found small doses of marijuana can raise serotonin levels, while too much of the plant can drop serotonin levels dramatically.

I didnt read the article but coming from someone who suffers from clinical depression I have to contest this claim as it does not matter if I smoke just a hit or smoke 5 bowls to my head the effects are the same and it actually balances me out the exact same way my depression meds do.

Marijuana being an Entheogen seems to intensify my current state of mind. The result is deeper insight and critical thinking on my personal issues. The effect is that a Good Outlook seems to become better, and a Bad Outlook can get worse.

I'm glad at least someone is making a scientific study of this topic. You always have to be skeptical of government-funded studies (even the Canadian government) because politics plays a big role in the outcome. If there is grant money available to prove marijuana is harmful, then someone will do the research to prove that it is.

Thanks Med...

I didn't want to post anything until others had a chance. I've delt with depression too and I never had any changes good or bad from MMJ...

I can see your point but there have been times that I've "adjusted my attitude" by taking a break and medicating when I was loosing my patience or when physical pain causes crankiness...

Interesting...

Oh and I agree that many studies are biased regardless of funding sources. That is why I hoped that others would reply with personal experiences.

Thanks harmreduction

Yes, it seems that when I take a break to medicate I can adjust my attitude and see things differently. I totally agree with your statement.

MMJ potential for depression thearapy seems to be up to the individual a great deal, and how they manifest any benefit.

Unlike SSRI's (sellect serotinin reuptake inhibitors) like prozac, zoloft, and paxil, which actually increase the serotonin (happiness chemical) in the brain, which can be easily measured, the benefitial effects of entheogens including MMJ are difficult to test. You can't just look at the neurotransmitter activity and accurately predict results, because other factors are influencing your mental state. I don't think the medical professionals fully understand these hidden benefits.

Re: Marijuana Alleviates Depression in Small Doses, But

I would agree with this study. In my dealings with depression and MMJ the small dose is just enough to help me smile and think of other things that which elevates my depression. If I get overmedicated at these times it seems to just make it worse because I think and worry about issues that are actually not as big as they seem while overmedicated. Therefore I limited myself and find it effective.

Very well said.

I went through a period of time that I used MMJ as my reward for doing something.

Sometimes, just anything, even getting dressed and driving to the nearest creek and panning a few shovels of dirt.

Between the piece and tranquility of nature, the sun, fresh air and a little exercise it was very therapeutic and a nice MM"J" after was very pleasing and often caused some introspection.

Antidepressants may show a measurable change in seritonin and help stablize the mood but it isn't the cure, plus the side effects.... Just suck!

Threapy cannot be measured either but I'd never have over come my depression without both Prozac and my Doctor/friend.

Psychology is too complex an issue to become fixated on just one aspect of wellness in my humble opinion.

I remember the look on my Doctor/friend's face after we finished panning gold one day and I lit up a MM"J" as my reward...

He wasn't pleased but that was because I tended to abuse anything to remain hidden behind my safety walls.

I did put it out after a couple tokes as a compromise. ;)

But you are correct.

Thanks Justonevoice...

I'm still kinda torn myself about the study.

I remember that when I over medicated and I was unable to be productive I increased my personal guilt levels and anxiety which then fed the depression...

I knew I was letting down those who were helping me the most and I knew anything simple that helped was appreciated but I would allow my guilt to build while I sat around doing nothing.

It also increased my anxiety because I knew someone would say something critical about my doing nothing all day too...

I allowed myself to play games for many years rather than address my personal pain. I dred the lost time but would never change a single day because of what I learned during my trials.

I hope you find relief and wellness my friend.

I'm Bi Polar and think MMJ helps calm me much better than all the antianxiety meds...I stay on all the important ones of course, I like being calm inside for a change. MMJ is a treatment at home that allows me time to sort through some of my past (last week) and consider options in a more creative manner. I am a big guy and medicate accordingly.

Re: Marijuana Alleviates Depression in Small Doses, But

Has anyone located the abstract on this? The issue is too recent for the journal database I use. Can't seem to find it on the web, can't even find the title.

I dunno about this. On face value I can see how it might make sense for some people. Perhaps this regiment may be better for mild to moderate cases of depression but I'm somewhat reluctant to believe that it's that mighty beneficial for severe, chronic cases. From the news article I don't think that's what their implying, just, my random two cents. That's why I'd like to see the article: what type of participants were used, their medical history, etc.

"Excessive cannabis use in people with depression poses high risk of psychosis," said Dr. Gobbi. Instead, she and her colleagues are focusing their research on a new class of drugs which enhance the effects of the brain's natural endo-cannabinoids."

Nice to know they're exploring other options in the realm of medication management.

Suffering both chronic pain and depression I have resulted to the healing ailments of marijuana. For me marijuana doesnt completley take away my pain, it makes my pain tolerable, making it possible to perform normal daily tasks. Ive noticed the same with using marijuana for depression, it doesnt take it away, it gives me a moment to step back and relax and allows me to cope. I have personally found small to large doses are both beneficial to help treat my depression.

In this study the investigators did not use THC they used WIN 55,212-2 a substance that produces effects similar to those of Cannabinoid derivatives such as THC but has an entirely different chemical structure.

Why would they use a synthetic format if they are trying to come to conclusions on THC?

Re: Marijuana Alleviates Depression in Small Doses, But

I have depression, I used to take pills for it but I wasn't really into the side effects.

I have noticed that smoking marijuana regularly has helped me deal with my depression and anxiety. I know for a fact that different strains and even different batches of marijuana vary when I smoke them but for the most part my mood is always uplifted and I become relaxed. It feels also like my head stops running a million miles an hour and I can focus and understand things in a more rational way. I tend to enjoy things around me a bit more also...

I like this quote below...

Some interesting factoids " One of effects or side effects of Marijuana is laughter of giggling" "Law enforcement are trained in assessing individuals using Marijuana 'if a individual is laughing or giggling he or she maybe under influence of Marijuana" The truth has been their all along -right in front of noses.
