Question Depression and MMJ concentrates

Does anyone experience a worsening of depression following the consumption of concentrates like hash, kief or goo? I really have to watch myself when it comes to smoking hash or goo because I generally feel 25-50% more depressed than normal the following day. When I smoke kief? Well, lets just say I don't smoke kief anymore.

For a long time I thought it all was probably just my imagination, but I've been tracking it since early this year and a very distinct pattern has emerged. My theory (emphasis on "theory") is that the relative potency of concentrates causes such a significant release of neurochemicals that even a night's rest isn't enough for my system to replenish the supply of those neurochemicals.

And so I'm curious if anyone else has had similar experiences because it would seem that there might be a maximum dose for some people when using cannabis to treat certain conditions, i.e. depression in this particular case. I've heard a few accounts here and there that were similar to mine, but I'm interested in what the sizable WT population has to say.

Thanks in advance for your feedback! Take it easy!

yeah since I started smoking mmj again I definitely have to watch just how much flower I smoke in a night because it makes me feel crummy the next day. I think thats a pretty damn good theory.

huh I suffer from depression as well, I to my knowledge have not had this happen to me, but then again I may not really be noticing it. I will have to pay more attention next time. That really sucks that you see a pattern that makes it worse.

Cannabis is a blocker to some degree but when well medicated some of those thoughts come out and can make you more depressed for a short time,.
not sure if it's a good feeling or not,.
usually not but later you feel better from it,.
~ Pain causes us to get upset, once the nerve dies the pain is gone to some degree also,.
it's a healing process I like to think,.

Re: Depression and MMJ concentrates

Depression is such a tricky illness. I used to feel depressed the day after I smoked MJ when I was an occasional smoker, but since I bought my rec, and have been smoking it every day (since Feb '07), my mood has improved dramatically. Oddly enough, hash has the best effect for me now. But like I said, depression is very tricky - so many factors involved. We're all different. What works for one person won't work for everybody. I am now experimenting with MJ by cutting waaaaaay down to smoking only 2-3 times a week, maybe a gram at most. I'm going to see if that helps as much as smoking it every day. Since I stopped smoking it daily - about 5 days ago - I have felt depressed in the morning. I'm not sure if MJ is something that works like Zoloft (you have to take it every day) or if it's like Xanax (much more effective if you take it every so often). I've never smoked MJ during a depressive episode. i doubt it would give me much pleasure once I'm in a depression - then I need the big guns (Xanax, Vicodin, morphine - would be ideal). During my next episode (I've had more than 3 so it's a sure thing) I'll see what smoking MJ & hash can do for me. To wrap this all up, do what works best for you. You may have to experiment some. You'll also need a doctor. I haven't told mine about MJ, but I haven't had an episode since I've been seeing him. Anyway, I hope you're all doing OK and I think it's great that we get to talk about these issues on WT because they are very important. Good luck.

Sounds like a good theory to me too. Someone once wrote on these boards that the key to good MMJ dosing is using small amounts on a regular basis. I find that the times when I'm smoking more than usual are the times that it feels like it might be making me depressed.

I like to envision my body as a marsh, able to remove toxins at a certain rate. MMJ like all drugs is a toxin, and the key is finding a dosage that's effective but also less than the body's capacity to clean it out. If I take in more than my body can clean out, then it starts building up in my system too much and I get too many side effects. MMJ more than other drugs tends to build up in the system because it's stored in the fat cells, so more than other drugs it's important to keep the dosage low, because the body is not only cleaning out your last dose but also all the other doses stored in the fat cells.

my 2 cents

I am not a daily smoker, but I have found that there were times when I was depressed and after I medicated, it altered my view and I felt better.

I agree. Even different types of concentrates can have different effects (depending on what flower their based on). And our bodies process everything -- including MMJ -- in their own way.

I also agree that its good to play with dosage and type of medication to see what works best for you and doesn't exacerbate the side effects.

My best of luck to you!

Love and Peace.

Re: Depression and MMJ concentrates

This sounds odd to me cause i was diagnosed with depression about 3yrs ago now and for the longest time i was taking lexapro then i wasnt eligible to be on my dads health insurance anymore and i dont have the money to pay for insurance i had to switch to the generic which i took for around 6-7 months and after around the 5th month it was like taking a sugar pill no effect at all. Now im on a zoloft generic which has been working great compared to the other generic. The thing is that both pill work in different ways. It really depends on your chemical makeup and how your brain functions. I have found that when depressed i figure out what is making me depressed such as enviroment things that just happened my mood leading up to the depressed feeling and by doing that im able to stay in a pretty good mood each and every day.

I also find that concentrates work great for me. Some arent as good as others it depends on the type such as hash, fullmelt, goo, oil be it hash or honey or keif. Also find out how it was made what methods what was used to make it.

I find that lower quality concentrates can bring about depressing feelings but when smoking high quality properly prepared concentrates i feel super. When getting concentrates ask when it was made, how, from what material (leaf, shake, buds) and that will help greatly if the budtender knows this information. Hash and Oils can be made in several ways which i could go into but wont cause i dont want to get in trouble. One of the most basic things though is the better the product used to make the concentrate the better its gonna be.

I stay away from kief cause it doesnt have the effect i like. I would quite classify it as a concentrate. Hash can be great of worthless for me. Oils are the same as hash. Next time you get a honey oil or a hash oil put it in the fridge for a while until it becomes solid. It should be somewhat flaky. I know it sounds strange but the best oils with be somewhat flaky when they are truely clean and purged of any contaminants.

Re: Depression and MMJ concentrates

I stopped taking LSD because of depression the next day.....and it's not a great idea to take LSD

I've noticed that I've become more depressed after smoking lately, but my life's gotten very depressing lately as well. I've also only been able to afford stress (which is depressing in and of itself). I think the stress is a sativa because it makes me think about my situation and it's hard to shut my brain off at bedtime. I'm hoping I can head down south to visit some shops and get some good indica, but I'll have to wait and see.

Re: Depression and MMJ concentrates

i've found that fequent small doses help with my depression more than smoking a bunch.

i refuse to take antidepressants, just flat refuse. i see the merit for them, and i believe for most people they can make a huge difference in their depression. for me, i couldnt get happy when i was on them. i wasnt sad, but i wasnt happy. more like a lack of emotion problem.

if i can keep THC levels in my body at a fairly low level its indescribable how much it helps my depression. i need to medicate on a large dose if my back is hurting. but thats neither here nor there
