I was in the SGV and I was driving when a Stealth Bomber caught my eye .! Man that thing shocked me as I was not expecting to see it . It did many fly by's over SGV my son and I and his cousin loved it . Anyone else see it on Sunday ?

I've seen the Stealth and some other big army jets taking off out of the Lancaster area.

When I lived up in Bouquet Cyn, the smaller jets would buzz over us, clear the mountain top and do barrel rolls.

Dont they usually do the stealth bomber over the rose parade ? I think ? im always so worn out from a fun night on new years eve . But to see it in the skys over a urban area LOW out of the blue was kinda scary but exciting .Btw Z that cool stuff I love airplanes .

My youngest son and I, go to opening day at Dodger Stadium every season.
Two seasons ago, the Stealth Bomber did a low fly-by over the stadium during the playing of the National Anthem.

It was one of the most awesome things ever!

That must have been pretty damn cool to see. I got to go inside one when I visited my brother in the Air Force in South Dakota (with the control panel covered up and under military supervision, of course), but I've never actually seen one in flight.

Oh I would love to make it into a spy novel....

but the truth is a lot less fun.... I had a security clearance that went to the moon.... which meant that while I was on active duty I was "watched" full time as part of the "human reliability program"...

when I got off active duty, I was restricted to the continental US for four additional years...

"They" impressed me early on that "THEY" were serious about security.

As for my involvement in the "black world"... nah, not really.... I was a mechanic (crew chief)... I might have known where they were going, I might have even known what they were looking for... but I didnt make those decisions....

But the airplane was like a Buck Rodgers novel to me at the time... Like I said, I had always been a wing nut.... and when I went into the SR program it was still a black program... It was first officially publicly acknowledged just prior to the Farnsbourough Air Show in 1974 in the UK... Lyndon Johnson had "mentioned" its existence in 1964... but no pictures and no specifications were made public then....

The aircraft that went to the Farnsbourough show used the event as an opportunity to set a few records... 1974... and the SR was timed from New York to London...in 1 hour 54 minutes and 56.4 seconds.... (compare that to best commercial Concorde flight time is 2 hours 52 minutes, and the Boeing 747 averages 6 hours 15 minutes.)

I cant help but wonder.... if the US Air Force was flying the SR-71 in 1968.... an airplane designed in the days of the SLIDE RULE not computers... what are they flying now that we have never even heard of?

At night, on pitch black nights they would fly aircraft out of there that they didn't want the public to see.

that is kinda funny...kinda not.

One of the worst "fights" I ever had with my ex-wife came about because I wouldnt answer any questions about the aircraft... at the time, what she was asking me was classified. She was outraged that I didnt "trust" her.

SO, you can imagine how funny it was, years later.... out of boredom and curiosity I "googled" the SR....

And the very first image I ever saw on the internet of the SR was a picture of the pilot's cockpit, facing the instrument panel... with all the instruments installed....

Not very remarkable these days. Stone-age tech...these days....

But, when I was on active duty, if I had seen someone taking that picture, I would have been 100% justified to shoot them. No questions asked.

I still wont discuss the particulars of missions I launched. I have no idea if they are still classified, but due to the nature of the business... I doubt they have been declassified.

What the aircraft COULD do, how high, how fast, how far.... those are now common knowledge.

Where it went, what it did when it got there... a different story.

I will say this. The aircrews that flew that airplane were some of the best and brightest in the service. MANY of them went on to become General officers. All of them had great big balls.

The aircraft was built at Palmdale. Plant 42. The Skunk Works.... I was there many times. I was honored to meet aviation GIANT Kelly Johnson... and his successor, Ben Rich.

Dont misunderstand... I was NOT a mover and shaker in this... I was a cog in the works, (minor cog at that)... just an Air FOrce mechanic, in the right place at the right times.....

When it came time to test the initial aircraft, they were boxed up and trucked out to Groom Lake (yeah, area 51)... I only went out there once, for an afternoon, to work on the inlet doors of one of the planes that had gone to Palmdale for depot level maintenance.
