Steve Cooley punished deputy district attorneys for unionizing last year, in some cases transferring veteran prosecutors to low-level assignments. By Robert Faturechi November 2, 2009 E-mail Print Share Text Size A union representing deputy district attorneys filed a lawsuit last week against Los Angeles County and Dist. Atty. Steve Cooley alleging the department's senior managers retaliated against employees for unionizing last year. The complaint accuses Los Angeles County's top law enforcer of using "19th century thuggery commonly employed against union organizers," including punitive work transfers. The Assn. of Deputy District Attorneys, which began representing about 1,000 Los Angeles County prosecutors in March 2008, is currently in the midst of contract negotiations with the district attorney's office and the county. The complaint, filed in federal court in Los Angeles, alleges that managers transferred senior union officials to juvenile courts -- usually reserved for attorneys starting their careers -- to lengthen their commutes from home. The union alleges managers called the retaliatory practice "freeway therapy." The complaint also accuses the department of helping cook up evidence that a heterosexual union board member took part "in homosexual conduct." Response to the suit from Cooley and county counsel was not available Friday. Marc Debbaudt, a deputy district attorney and union vice president, alleged he was transferred to juvenile courts after 19 years in the department because he is an active member of the union. The alliance of the Trutanich(sp?)/Cooley; adding JUST the recent corruption reports of Trutanich in the Times for October 09 alone and Cooley, now having THIS little problem just might put a wedge between the two for the sake of "self preservation". The team break up is seemingly more likely than not, headed to focus on genuine self preservation vs. screwing aroung with State MM laws for the County of Los Angeles (of course, further backed by the President's office). BOTH have accusations, one now being on the court docket that include jail time not to mention career suicide.  They play "bully mafia" and go figure, SOME people just don't like that and have power & money to call um' on their bullshit. Surely, the fact that this suit is filed for "union" matters certainly had nothing to do with the power of the AFL-CIO either.  Cooley's reactions, or rather lack of, are a sign of him getting his "jet's cooled". Trutanich is next. Extortion, Councilwoman THREATS, etc. They both carry a very unattractive arrogance that SLAYS me. Surely, I'm not alone in this observation. Maybe, just maybe, the press attention and career boosters for the MM laws are now a new and different headline run of the wrath of hell that could make MM votes not an effort worth their 'extreme sport' support. Looks like the 10/10 Town Hall meeting luncheon could have a new press with new questions INDEED. The council wants to support THEM and be known for backing the C/T team ? eh.....hmmmmmm.  Oh, and the Mayor going on an on today in his gleaming intro of the new police chief being tough on youth violence, rehab, not jail / root of problems vs. incarcerations /etc. Geez, I thought Mr. V. was gonna blow him right there at the press conference today. We seemingly have a man that walks on water here to save the children and wipe out gangs. Notable: No mention of MM laws or any war on drugs, medical, health care... as is not on the "agenda"..
