Rep Power: 7982 | Asteroids to hit planet earth? According to a Federal Report, NASA, the one institution responsible for spotting asteroids that could pose a threat to planet earth does not have enough funding to complete this project. The telescope systems currently in place only allow for about one third of the project to be completed, and it seems the U.S. Congress is not providing any funding to update these systems. So what could happen with these potential threats? Armageddon? RT's Dina Gusovsky discusses the scary prospects of this global problem with Berin Szoka from the Space Frontier Foundation. |

Not really sure if it would do any more good to prevent the asteroids from hitting, but it's a bit more proactive than a telescope. I could sure kill a few hours trying to hit space rocks with super heated chunks of metal, propelled at mach 8 and beyond with nothing more than electro magnets. Highly destructive and more or less environmentally friendly. (Providing you don't aim it at anything in your environment.) | |

Rep Power: 3681 | Re: Asteroids to hit planet earth? There's plenty of ways to divert an incoming object if you know about it long enough in advance. Just watch the Discovery channel some time. Put a satellite in orbit around it to change it's path gravitationally Use solar power to project a microwave beam against it ablating the surface producing thrust to change it's path Park a satellite on the surface and use chemical/ion thrust to change it's orbit The list could go on and on without resorting to idiotic Hollywood ideas like blowing it up with a nuke. Or, just bury your head in the sand and hope it doesn't happen in your lifetime. Or you children, or grandchildren's lifetime... We spend more money on ringtones than is spent on this project, great priorities as a society! |
