Thursday, November 08, 2007 Treating heart disease with cannabis
Cannabidiol is a major constituent of the cannabis plant that is not intoxicating, unlike its cousin tetrahydrocannabinol which is the main psychoactive ingredient in the plant.
Now Lola Weiss at Hadassah University Hospital in Israel and colleagues say that the drug could be used to treat heart disease. In studies on rats, cannabidiol was found to improve the profile of lipids in the blood, reduce the hardening of arteries and prevent scarring of the heart following a heart attack. Whether the same success will be achieved with humans remains to be seen, but it looks a promising avenue of research.
