Rep Power: 23 | GLACA Announces First Accredited Medical Cannabis Facilities The ongoing effort to fully implement California's medical cannabis laws at the local level reached a quiet milestone last night, when the Greater Los Angeles Caregivers Alliance (GLACA) announced that five medical cannabis dispensing collectives in Los Angeles are the first to be accredited as compliant with the organization's self-regulation program. GLACA is a voluntary association of collectives and cooperatives that has developed safety and operational standards for members to protect patients and ensure legal integrity at medical cannabis facilities. The GLACA protocols require rigorous patient screening, set limits on the amount of medicine a collective can provide, and require adequate security. GLACA members began meeting monthly last year with the goals of developing and implementing protocols. The City of Los Angeles has been slow to adopt guidelines for the hundreds of facilities that have opened in that city in the last two years. GLACA members hope the self-regulation model will address community concerns and keep patients safe, while influencing the city to adopt sensible guidelines. GLACA committee members visited colleagues to inspect their facility and processes after members applied for accreditation last month. Following the unannounced inspections, each applicant was visited by a "secret shopper" who tested collective procedures by attempting to gain access without a valid recommendation or asked for more than the agreed upon two ounce limit. Dozens of collectives have applied for GLACA accreditation, and organizers anticipate the number will grow as GLACA Member Logos begin appearing on the windows, flyers, and advertisements of accredited members. With more than 50 regular members, GLACA is the largest of several community-based alliances of its kind around California. Attendees at a symposium for collectives hosted by Americans for Safe Access (ASA) last December identified self-regulation as a key element in shoring up support for collectives and prevent a backlash for poorly operated facilities. Since then, ASA representatives have traveled all over the state seeding autonomous self-regulation alliances in Sacramento, San Mateo, Santa Barbara, Orange County, and other locations. The five Los Angeles collectives accredited by GLACA last night are: 420 CC Blue Water Industries California Patients Alliance Eagle Rock Herbal Collective Holistic Caregivers: A Wellness Center Purelife Alternative Caregivers For more information about GLACA, visit http://www.CaregiversAlliance.org To find out more about organizing local self-regulation alliances, contact the LA ASA Office at (323) 464-7719 or email Don@SafeAccessNow.org __________________ Don Duncan Southern California Coordinator Americans for Safe Access www.AmericansForSafeAccess.org <http://www.americansforsafeaccess.org/> Americans for Safe Access (ASA) is the largest national member-based organization of patients, medical professionals, scientists and concerned citizens promoting safe and legal access to cannabis for therapeutic use and research. Rep Power: 19 | Re: GLACA Announces First Accredited Medical Cannabis Facilities GLACA is a voluntary association of medical cannabis collectives and cooperatives in the Los Angeles area. Operators of local collectives and cooperatives who share our goals are invited to join. Please send an email to our Spokesperson for more information. Community members with input on our Safety and Operational Protocols should can email a representative of the Steering Committee. For general information about medical cannabis facilities, please visit the Community Resources Page. operators !!!!!!!!! not members or patients or caregivers or doctors in words i can understand its like putting the fox in charge of the hen house no info on accreditation is that a word any way is the point comming across yet so if i own a shop i can join a group of people that check out other places also i see no comment on places like bathroom handicap axcess which all should have or at least let all know they dont among other important topics for patients i thought mmj was for patients not just operators only but as the banner above states coop news and reviews not news and reviews for patients and since dec only 5 have been put on the list that is less than 1 a month 400+ more to go now i need to medicate |

Rep Power: 23 | Re: GLACA Announces First Accredited Medical Cannabis Facilities We would love it if the current political and legal climate allowed for a 100% transparent system that was viewable by operators, patients, and advocates. I also wish that the current political and legal climate allowed us to integrate patients and advocates more as well. However, the most important thing about the Greater Los Angeles Caregivers Alliance is buy-in from the operators. If operators don't want to attend ANY trade association, be it the Alliance or a patient-based group, then there is no association. We briefly tried integrating patients in a face-to-face manner, and too many operators were (justifiably) hesitant to frankly discuss their operations in a room full of strangers, any of which could be a DEA agent. So for now, we are asking people with input and suggestions to email the Alliance, and all input will be addressed. Any patient that sees a need to be more involved should join any of the advocacy groups and help change Federal Law, so that one day we can do what you are talking about. Remember, there are some honest operators out there. They are not all bad, and that is exactly what we are trying to show. The goal is for any patient, cop, or politician to know from the street (by seeing the sticker in the window or on a listing) that when they go inside that collective, it will be a safe, secure, clean place where they will get quality service in a legal manner. I, personally, think that is a major accomplishment, but that is just me. Last edited by allorganic; 06-14-2007 at 03:16 PM.. Reason: speling |

| Re: GLACA Announces First Accredited Medical Cannabis Facilities While playing the devils advocate you risk the chance of sounding ignorant. Many of us understand the needs of our patients and are honestly working toward a day when we can offer each and every patient all the services that they can think of. GLACA is not dispensarie's looking at dispensarie's for dispensarie's but instead patient's that operate dispensaries looking out for patient's needs and rights. The collectives that take part and become accredited are the people that are there to protestand/or speak to the governmental bodies that represent us all. They are the people that stand up for your rights when you just simply don't have the balls too. So before you get so darn hypercritical you should know what you are talking about. So the next time you feel like playing devils advocate come to a protest and introduce yourself to me, I will be the 6-2 300lb bald guy with a gray goatee and then you will have my respect because it means you have the balls to stand up to our government face to face in real time. Until then quiet is kept. Sorry but I don't pussyfoot around but instead I say exactly what I think and feel. Last edited by LAMMJactivist; 06-16-2007 at 05:18 AM.. |

Acreditatiion is a common practice in many different fields. It basically means that Standards of service, cleanliness and professionalism must be met (IE: proper Patient Verifing, Current business licenses , business liability insurance and much more) by all clubs to become accredited. They are visited by a commitee member who does an unannounce site visit (including secret shoppers-Which by the way are patients) to make sure that when a patient goes to said locations with the GLACA Accreditdation Sticker on the door or window he or she knows that that collective is truly dedicated to patients needs, neighborhood concerns and operates to higher standards. Re: the mafia statement, We do not do anything simular to criminals. We are a political organzation striving for a political change so that we as providers can help our patients better. | Re: GLACA Announces First Accredited Medical Cannabis Facilities Brian please don't take my comments too personal my goal is only to make patients think about standing up for their rights. As you where being the Devils Advocate I was being the hard ass that believes that Americans need to stop being so damn complacent and speak up aginst our government that seems to just ignore us because so many of us don't do it. And yes as Allorganic stated if you don't see me at a protest or council mtng then either you don't know who I am or hell maybe I am just loosing weight (lol) and nobody recognizes me. Lenny |
