Rep Power: 36928 | Are You A Vegetarian Or "Almost" Vegan? Don't ever remember the thread coming up, but I wonder how many WT'ers are vegetarians. My wife thinks I am, but I'm not. I eat fish and dairy...but no meat or meat products. So I guess I would be an ovo-lacto veggie. Anyway, how about you? Have you found good meat alternatives for your diet? |

Rep Power: 62781 | I've been a vegetarian for over 5 years now, and despite almost being disowned by my family (grandma, who's cooking is the bomb!) and a culture that caters to the fast food diet, I am still here and stronger than ever. If you are looking for a substitute for the texture or taste of meat, there are products such as Morningfarms and Gardenburger that make some pretty believable fake meat product. As for me, we eat a lot of beans and rice and steamed vegetables. If I am feeling a lack of energy it's usually because I need some protein. Carbohydrates and a sublingual b12 vitamin, and you're alive buddy... :slaugh: |

For everyone I have to reccomend this cookbook, for vegetarians but not just. Deborah Madison's Vegetarian Cooking For Everyone It won Julia Child's Book Award for best cookbook. the recipes are incredible and I have to say without some of them, I probably wouldn't have made it all these years without eating meat. mrscucudookie, thanks for an awesome post.

Rep Power: 62781 | Pumpkins are full of beta-carotene. Current research indicates that a diet rich in foods containing beta-carotene may reduce the risk of developing certain types of cancer and offers protection against heart disease. Beta-carotene is effective against other diseases as well as some degenerative aspects of aging. :sbounce: |

Rep Power: 36071 | Re: Are You A Vegetarian Or "Almost" Vegan? Strict 'vegans' usually challenged w/protein access ,especially if beans become an issue (digestion) ... if one consumes proper quantities of 'raw' fruits/vegetables/seeds/nuts/herbs/humous ... less 'cooking'(heating) allows for proper 'enzyme absorption' to derive maximum nutritional benefits ... 'fish oils' vs flaxseed (skin) for heart support ... eggs(whites) ,whey ,milk fine protein sources ... 32 years octo/lacto/pesci ,down 58 lbs ,energy of a 35 yo ... our bodies give us opportunity to maximize potential w/very little effort ... mind/body ,yin/yang ,& stretttch (ie.,yoga) ... that is all ..... |

being a vegetarian isn't dangerous, eating three meals a day that includes meat is dangerous. if you do make change in your diet, get advice and take it slow and easy. garbage in garbage out

Rep Power: 0 | Re: Are You A Vegetarian Or "Almost" Vegan? I eat all raw mostly fruit and I get my protein from Hemp Seed. I've never felt better my entire life and haven't gotten sick once since starting the diet. I've been on it for four months and my muscle is a lot stronger then before. It is what your body is evolved for. Agriculture has only been around 10,000 years while Homo-Sapiens have survived for 175,000+ years. If everyone ate what they were evolved for the Human race would have a lifespan of easily 100 years, without disease. But the government would rather us... |

Rep Power: 3681 | Re: Are You A Vegetarian Or "Almost" Vegan? I'm 90% vegetarian, I still like my seafood once a couple times a month (locally caught at the farmer's market), and the rare peice of meat. My GF is Bhraman vegetarian meaning lacto-veg, no eggs. It's been interesting changing how I cook over the years learning how to replace eggs and meats. We eat almost no processed foods, store bought bread and various veggie/soy patties being the exception. The biggest bitch is trying to keep meals varied, so I don't get bored. I'm really thinking of writing a cookbook with all of the different things I've come up with. Cooking a meal and having a meat-eater actually think they had meat gives me a kick, when cooking for guests. |

| Re: Are You A Vegetarian Or "Almost" Vegan? I'm an omnivore. Food with a face doesn't bother me at all. However I really enjoy vegetarian and vegan cuisine when it's done right. Often at a restaurant I will choose tofu over a meat protein option; it all depends. |

Rep Power: 11507 | Re: Are You A Vegetarian Or "Almost" Vegan? Well I'll chime in; I decided to (or rather a Doctor did, lol) about 36 years ago that my cholest. levels were sky-bound. As I progressed through 3 whole days of steamed veggies and rice. I concluded I must learn to cook something else, lol. Graduated from CIA, was a top-tier chef for a while. Then went vegan, this was very difficult in the early days as there were not many places to eat! Anyway it has given me less illness and if it comes for shorter duration. Stamina is jammin'! Many famous atheletes are vegetarian. The thing that has been funny is many when they find out, almost attack the concept as if they "need" to defend their own lifestyles. I really don't care what others do, just try not to get so defensive when someone mentions they are vegan/vegetarian, we are not all seeking to convert and condemn those who aren't, lol. Live and let live! Good reading "Diet for a Small Planet", Old McDonalds' (Factory) Farm. Foods you may enjoy Lumens Foods in Louisiana makes Heartline, a superior meat substitute product. It has fooled many "meat-eaters" into saying "What's this? I thought you "were" a vegetarian!" HA ha ha Then they read the label and say they knew all along! |
