| Re: the war I'll watch every second of it. My grandfather served during ww2 fought and survived the Invasion of Normandy, and I'm an obsessive collector, and lover of the war documentary, with a focus on ww2. I hope it's good. I really loved my grandfather, he was one of the guiding forces in my development, and I lost him as a teenager. So part of my ww2 obsession is reconnecting with those good memories. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a war monger, but there was something really moral and righteous about ww2 that made it the right thing to do, as tragic as it was, at least to me, and it set our world back countless generations with loss of life, it's a damn shame it had to happen, but it did also bring about a lot of the technology that we take for granted every day now. |

Rep Power: 0 | Re: the war World War ! and II were both created by the international bankers and military industrial complex who profit off of war. A lot of money was made off of both wars. Both "wars" were not wars, they were crimes against humanity committed by the international bankers and military industrial complexes. The Hitler thing was just a distraction from the bigger plan. Japan's bombing of Pearl Harbor was staged. |

| Re: the war Ken Burns is the greatest documentery maker ever! Most of his PBS stuff is a bit long...but beautiful camera work and lot's of good research hold my attention. It's TV you can learn from... If only the pledge breaks were shorter..that's half the hours right there. |

Rep Power: 112110 | Re: the war OK, so now I have watched episode two. Ken Burns is a very skilled film maker, and I am enjoying this effort. some background... Both my parents were "veterans" if you will of WWII. Dad is a Navy vet, served on a small aircraft carrier in the Pacific. Five of his brothers were also in combat, two in Europe, three others in the Pacific. Mom was a civilian who had seven brothers in combat, four in Europe, three in the Pacific. Over the years, I heard my family's "oral history" of WWII. When I came back from Vietnam, I began hearing my uncles, slowly sharing the experiences of combat. Some of those stories would mean nothing to someone who had not seen combat. Some of those stories were not to be shared "in polite society", some were hilarious stories of military bureaucracy gone mad.... I can remember the look on my Mother's face when she talked about how worried she was that her brothers might never come home, or that they would be "maimed". I am amazed by my reactions so far to the film being shown.... As riveting as the stories are, I find myself thinking more of the stories told by my uncles, or my Mother and Father... I felt privileged to have heard the stories from those who lived the history, if that makes any sense.... So, like lovethehash has done, I would love to hear from "other" generations, and their reactions to hearing stories even further removed by time.... What do those of you who are watching think of the series so far? |

Rep Power: 318066 | Re: the war I was and am completely blown away by the first two of this series. Mr. Burns is giving us unique perspective and not sugar-coating ANYTHING! It's hard not to dream that all of us can be together as one, like we were in the Great War, that may never happen again. The focus on the home front has taught me facts and tidbits I was unaware of, or ignorant of. Our industries gave us the advantage we needed, driven by our courageous people. The matter-of-fact way that these HEROS told their stories brought tears to my eyes. The story about the fella digging the mass grave for his friends killed on the Baatan Death March, deciding to throw his dog tags into the grave in an attempt to give his family closure made me question myself. The Gentleman, you would know what I mean if you saw the show, who volunteered to be a belly-gunner on raids into Germany despite the fact that his only brother had already been killed, again made me question my own courage. Burns has done this show non-politically. He is making me DAMN PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN. I will watch every second of this wonderful documentary, and I hope you all will as well. |

Rep Power: 318066 | Re: the war I have a heckova lot of respect for people with no televisions. I am a TV generation kid who grew up locked to the idiot box. I can sing jingles from old shows and cigarette comercials. Now I watch sports and news. My wife and kids control the Tivo box, and they will only allow me to keep The War episodes for about a day. Please make the effort to see this incredible show about our Country, Hands, I doubt you will regret it. |
