'Kung Fu' actor David Carradine dead in apparent suicide
The star, 72, was found hanging in his Bangkok hotel room.

BANGKOK – Actor David Carradine, star of the 1970s TV series "Kung Fu" who also had a wide-ranging career in the movies, has been found dead in the Thai capital, Bangkok. A news report said he was found hanged in his hotel room and was believed to have committed suicide.

A spokesman for the U.S. Embassy, Michael Turner, confirmed the death of the 72-year-old actor. He said the embassy was informed by Thai authorities that Carradine died either late Wednesday or early today, but he could not provide further details out of consideration for his family.

The Web site of the Thai newspaper The Nation cited unidentified police sources as saying Carradine was found today hanged in his luxury hotel room.

It said Carradine was in Bangkok to shoot a movie and had been staying at the hotel since Tuesday.

The newspaper said Carradine could not be contacted after he failed to appear for a meal with the rest of the film crew on Wednesday, and that his body was found by a hotel maid at 10 a.m. today. The name of the movie was not immediately available.

It said a preliminary police investigation found that he had hanged himself with a cord used with the room's curtains. It cited police as saying he had been dead at least 12 hours and there was no sign that he had been assaulted.

A police officer at Bangkok's Lumpini precinct station would not confirm the identity of the dead man to The Associated Press, but said the luxury Swissotel Nai Lert Park hotel had reported that a male guest killed himself there.

Carradine was a leading member of a venerable Hollywood acting family that included his father, character actor John Carradine, and brother Keith.

In all, he appeared in more than 100 feature films with such directors as Martin Scorsese, Ingmar Bergman and Hal Ashby.

But he was best known for his role as Kwai Chang Caine, a Shaolin priest traveling the 1800s American frontier West in the TV series "Kung Fu," which aired in 1972-75.

He reprised the role in a mid-1980s TV movie and played Caine's grandson in the 1990s syndicated series "Kung Fu: The Legend Continues."

He returned to the top in recent years as the title character in Quentin Tarantino's two-part saga "Kill Bill."

I havent heard if there was a note or anything. It is kind of an odd thing for someone such as him who is 72 years old to do. It may come out that this was not a suicide after all, but just my speculation.

I was thinking too that something was really odd about this too. Why would a 72 year old man just suddenly do that? And in Bangkok of all places.

I am very saddened by David's death. R.I.P.

I have known him for over a decade and this makes no sense to me. David was never
an overly cheery guy. But he never struck me as depressed, let alone suicidal. He was
enjoying life...working, traveling, doing what he wanted to do with his life. I think there
might be more to this story than has been reported so far.

This is the problem with the way we get our news... the early reports labeled it suicide, now the story is auto-erotic asphyxiation.

Thailand can be a pretty strange place, and "facts" can be pretty fluid.

We will never know for sure what happened....except we lost Mr. Carradine.

I am saddened by his loss, and feel confused by the news reports as well. Hopefully an autopsy will determine things more conclusively for us, so we can get a little better closure on this man who touched so many of us through his acting.

I dont think he killed himself. What reason would he have had. Life was going well for him. He didnt have any real issues with the world. There has to be something else going on here.

Now we know why David Carradine's family thinks foul play may have been involved in the actors death -- his manager tells us Carradine was found with his hands tied behind his back.

Chuck Binder, Carradine's manager, tells us he firmly believes Carradine did not take his own life -- nor does he think David died accidentally. Binder says the family has been told Carradine's hands were immobilized by the rope.

Carradine was found by a hotel maid Thursday morning with a rope tied around his neck and another around his genitals in a Bangkok hotel room.

I hate to say this but i hope it turns out he was murdered. Because if he went down due to trying some kinky shit and going too far, that would be really sad and kind of pathetic.

I looked at the photo of him - hands in front. Disgusted me thoroughly, I wanted to puke.
Anyway, it was accidental, just like Vaughn Bode and the dude from INXS. Basically, the safety mechanisms people rig for auto-asphyxiation are supposing you are AWAKE! Should let you go automatically, if you're passed out.

It was very, very important for his family to be accidental, and not suicide.
