Rep Power: 17 | VSL #3 for Crohn's? Hi everyone I have crohn's disease like many of you here. I am 23 and was diagnosed when I was 17. I medicate with cannabis mainly to relieve that awful "unstable" feeling and the cramps that come when I'm making lots bathroom trips because of flares (unfortunately almost every day, or multiple times a day for me). I currently take mesalamine (lialda) and nexium but they have totally stopped working. I don't want to take any of the 6MP immunosuppresants my doctor is recommending because my boyfriend is a chemo patient (what a sickly pair we are!) and two immunosuppressed people together is not a good situation!!! So he's prescribed this probiotic called VSL #3. It's really expensive and comes in packets that are filled with powder and it's got to be in the fridge. Anyone else have experience with it? I'm just about to start mine. |

They are also refrigerated, and you can get it in powder or capsules. The powder is really disgusting tasting so I recommend the capsules. I am on 6MP myself, 100 mg. a day, and I still have flares. I wouldn't worrry too much about the immunosuppresants, unless you are typically someone who gets sick alot. Just remember to get your flu shots, wash your hands alot (hand sanitizers work great), and try to stay away from people who are sick. |

| Re: VSL #3 for Crohn's? vsl#3 is usually insurance reimbursable and is a Doctors' favorite. most GI docs like it...it's a bit expensive. works for me. natren's "trinity" is an alternative and contains more forms of bacteria than vsl#3. i was on remicade for 3 years and have stopped treatment with it as i haven't had a flare in 14 months without it. befor remicade, i was in hospice every other month.... it's important to remember to avoid stress (ya sure!) and food based triggers! a candida clense and refined coconut oil are most helpful to myself and other crohnies i know. best wishes, 99.9% |
