I'am pretty sure it is legal, and I'am positive you need to see a Dr. to get yourself a prescription for it. Good Luck!

there are plenty of threads on this already but i'll say a couple things. Its fully legal, even by DEA standards, its synthetic and is only meant to mimic CERTAIN effects of MMJ. It's a total cop out by the feds, just to keep from hearing about "not enough medicines". Because thats all they hear. They dont realize the FULL potential so they put out a pill that suposedly helps with nausea and apitite. Every one says just take some thc capsules (hash caps) instead.

You are correct they are 100% legal and you do need a Dr.'s prescription.

Thats a pretty good overview of Marinol. It is totally synthetic and only is able to mimic (and poorly) some of the effects of MMJ. The pill was designed to act like the Delta-9 THC molecule, not any of the other cannabinoids or metabolites of THC. And although there is some buzz to it, that was something the scientists who developed it tried to work out of the pill, so it doesn't cover all ailments that MMJ can. As Zim has already stated t was mainly developed for appetite stimulation and nausea, mostly for chemo patients.

Once the Marinol goes through your system the final metabolite is the same as THC. So if you take a urine test and test positive for THC but have a marinol prescription you can actually use that to beat the failed test, since Marinol is FDA approved and 100% legal anywhere in the USA. So there are some up sides to having a Marinol prescription. But honestly for more exact effects I would stick with homemade hash pills.

As I was going thru my radiation series, I completely lost my appetite... food just was not interesting....

So they prescribed Marinol (the VA, a FEDERAL health care system) for "appetitie stimulation"... generic name for the chemical is dronabinol...

from the patient info insert:

"Dronabinol, the active ingredient in MARINOL® (dronabinol) Capsules,
is synthetic delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (delta-9-THC). Delta-9-
tetrahydrocannabinol is also a naturally occurring component of
Cannabis sativa L. (Marijuana)."

Didnt do a damn thing. Not at the starting dose(1 morning and nite), or twice the starting dose, or at three times the starting dose... these were the 5mg dose pills, they are available 2.5, 5 and 10 mg.

It is synthetic THC in sesame oil in a gel cap... they need to be kept refridgerated, the VA shipped them to me in styrofoam boxes with those little ice pack things....

Any medium to heavy smoker would probably have that much THC as a baseline anyway (I dont have any scientific backup for that, just a gut feeling), I think that is why I felt NO effects...

I suppose for a non-MMJ user, the pills MIGHT be useful.... but for a Medical Marijuana user, MMJ delivers MUCH better symptom control, and is useful for a MUCH larger variety of ailments.

The one benefit of a Marinol prescription would be the ability to beat a THC drug test... (IMHO)

your doc needs to write a perscription and that can be filled at a regular pharmacy. it can not be sold at a dispensary currently.

For me they seemed weak and didnt relieve much of my back pain, they are thc not CBD so I guess my pain needs the CBD's

My doctor gave me a prescription and I have not filled it yet as it is expensive. I plan to try them and post a review. I think they could be very helpful if they relieve my symptoms at all, for example if I'm flying somewhere that is not MJ-friendly (like the airport!). I'm keeping an open mind but I don't expect to get the same effects as smoking.

depends on your symptoms and proper dosage as most daily mmj users will require a much higher dosage

oh yea, btw target is the cheapest place i have found. Good price break for larger amounts.....aaannnnddd you can always take your script in and only get 4-5 tablets rather than drop hundreds on the full bottle to find out they dont work.

Yes ,seems just the 'skrip' is 'all' that's needed to 'mask' the cannabis test for insurance exams ,aircraftpilot exams ,etc ... Marinol/MMJ test identically ,as dosage varies ; inconsistant levels appear normal ... that is all .....

Marinol is not a price efficient way to medicate. I bought a bottle just to show my PO in LA County so they'll let me test possitive for THC with no problems and I can honestly answer 'no' to having used any illegal substances...but they're more like a weak-edible and only sufficient for prolonging the time between smoking and not an actual replacement for smoked cannabis.

My mother was dying of kidney disease (age 87). She had no appetite for several years, was frequently nauseous and hardly ate, but would not take marinol because her doctor told her it would make her act "funny." Finally, she did take some and it improved her appetite tremendously, and it was so gratifying to see her eat again. I visited her at the hospital and a commercial came on the tv for a hot fudge sundae and she asked, "Can I get one of those?"

Unfortunately her kidney disease was too far gone and she died August 1st 2006, but I saw for myself the appetite stimulating effects of marinol.

I am a STRONG proponent of MMJ, and I always defend it whenever I get the chance. I believe if my mother had taken it earlier she would have received the nutrition she sorely needed and it may have helped her.

But, I have heard several stories much like this... that is why I feel that for NON MMJ users, Marinol may indeed be useful for appetite and nausea...

For MMJ users, IMHO, its primary value is beating drug screens....

i have been medicating for years, so you can consider me a "heavy smoker".
my boyfriend & i have been perscribed Marinol for appetite stimulation(we hate the chore of eating).

i am also schooling to become a pharmacist... marinol is only for nausea & appetitee stimulation for patients undergoing cemo. its also time released every hour. so plan on snacking every hour.
so please, dont get it twisted... its totally not like smoking.

only your real physican can perscribe it (they HAVE to monitor your useage).
if you have no insurance, but do have AAA... its only $75 ( @ long's drug store pharmacy)

there must be multiple versions of the same drug then, the pills I got were small round gelcap type pills, brown, and filled with sesame oil... there was NO time release about it.

saliva dissolved the pill coating, leaving a puddle of oil....

Edit: a review of the Marinol website ( http://marinol.com ) makes no mention of any time release characteristics of Marinol in any of the forms prescribed....

Also, it is approved by the FDA for two uses: (from the Marinol website)

MARINOL is approved for two uses.

MARINOL treats nausea and vomiting associated with cancer chemotherapy in patients who have failed to respond adequately to conventional treatments.

MARINOL also treats appetite loss associated with weight loss in people
who have acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).


It is commonly used "off label" for anorexia, and appetite loss from other diseases/treatments... such as the use for my appetite loss from the radiation treatments for cancer...

I met a cancer patient who said she tried marinol, and said it basically didn't do anything. You can get a precription form a MD, but you have to have a reason for it. Plus, I heard it is not the same effect as MJ.
