Small victory in Orange County; more work still needs to be done

Although it wasn’t the slam-dunk we had hoped for, Orange County’s medical marijuana patients received a small victory last week.

On a 4-1 vote, the Orange County Board of Supervisors directed staff to draft a policy for local implementation of the medical marijuana ID card program. The supervisors also asked that a study be conducted to find out what experiences other counties are having with the program.

Because of enormous grassroots pressure, an all-Republican Board of Supervisors voted to take this small step towards implementing our medical marijuana laws, even in the face of fierce opposition from the DA and ridiculous comments made by the Sheriff's
Department.

Thank you for all your e-mails and calls to the Supervisors and to the 35+ of you who made time to attend the April 17th hearing. This grassroots action was crucial to the success that we attained.

While last week’s vote was a good indication for local patients, it is clear that more work still needs to be done in order to ensure that the law is implemented. Please click here to send a thank you letter to the four supervisors that voted in favor of drafting a policy for the ID card program. Only Supervisor Janet Nguyen voted against the measure. If you live in Supervisor Nguyen’s district (Santa Ana, Westminster, Midway City, and part of Garden City), please call her at (714) 834-3110 to politely and respectfully let her know how disappointed you are that she did not stand up for patients and the state law. Please ask her to vote to implement the program when the board votes again in July.

In order to make sure that the board approves implementation of the ID card program, we must continue to show our support for patients and California’s compassionate medical marijuana laws.

Please stay tuned for more updates and future opportunities for actions in Orange County.

Sincerely,
Aaron Smith

Now I have a question for you. Sheriff Corona has clearly stated that even if Orange County implements the Id card program that he will not honor it and that the sheriffs department will continue to confiscate meds and paperwork from patients. Are there any plans on addressing this issue if the card is passed.

I saw the tape of the supervisors..one of the supervisors said let them drive to hollywood. instead of approving coop regulations..ya lets just shove this 215,420 thing on some other city, like thats going work....can i use that statement tape from that supervisor to show a cop? they still think this an unseen elephant standing in the living room?

Resolving the Sheriff's illegal policy is of the utmost importance, even if the card program is not approved in Orange County. We have already asked the Sheriff's Office to rethink their protocols in light of the CHP lawsuit and resulting policy change. Sadly, I have a feeling that there will be no change in O.C. without litigation.

I want to thank ASA for speaking to the sheriffs department but as you stated unfortunately I think it will have to go into the courts as Sheriff Carona thinks he is to good for the own laws he is sworn to uphold and protect.

Re: Small victory in Orange County; more work still needs to be done

I attended the ASA meeting last night at the law offices of Wentworth, Paoli & Purdy. Bill Paoli discussed the Carona issue and the need for patients to attend the next supervisors meeting in July. A small number of patients were in attendance. Patients from OC need to become more proactive and show greater support for the commendable efforts by ASA and Bill to secure and protect our lawful rights, or the current problems may not change for the better.

The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, May 16 7-9PM at the Law Offices of Wentworth, Paoli & Purdy, LLP, 4631 Teller Avenue, Suite 100, Newport Beach, CA. I encourage all patients and movement supporters to attend and learn how we can make OC safer for MMJ patients.
