Rep Power: 5382 | Sample of email sent Council-member , I would like to request your office to outright reject the 4th Ordinance regarding the council’s stance on Medical Marijuana. The city must work with patients, medical providers and caregivers to develop a working policy towards Medical Marijuana. I am a near senior age, and have a horrible chronic illness, which I am treated by a MD monthly. He and my other MD’s have agreed that Medical Marijuana helps me with my condition. I have had a written recommendation for the past four years and have used marijuana to successfully treat my condition. How dare the city council, or the DA, thwart the California law that allows me safe access to my medicine, as had been the case for the past many years. Since the medicine works well, and I have had safe access to it, I am very concerned that I will now have to get my meds from a street dealer or a related drug cartel to stay well? I am appalled that the DA has decided to use precious city resources to close down the source of my medicine. Our city resources are spread thin and this is a waste of the city’s time and money. It has been reported that over 5,000 untested rape kits have gone untested due to the lack of funding in the city. What are the city’s priorities? What are your priorities in the council? As a member of the city council, it is your duty to protect and uphold the laws for the citizens that elected you. This week, a well-known medical marijuana clinic was virtually destroyed by the LAPD. Why was this allowed to occur? There must be a workable plan to allow patients safe access to our medicine. These smash and dash raids must stop immediately. It is hereby requested that you help secure the right of the terminally and chronically ill patients in Los Angeles to obtain medicine in a safe environment. It is not acceptable for the council to rush through the 4th Ordinance that will result in numerous expensive court challenges, and the loss of safe access for thousands of patients. Your help in this matter is needed and expected. With Thanks, |

Rep Power: 2191 | Re: Did You Make Those Calls? Send Emails? I called the representative in my district and left a message that I am a registered voter and I wanted their take on Ordinance 4, I asked them to reject this ordinance. I thought I was late getting involved with this and now LadyKnight tells me only a couple of calls have been made. Emails and protest may not be enough. This is unbelievable and very frustrating. What is everyone waiting for? |

Rep Power: 0 | Re: Did You Make Those Calls? Send Emails? Here's some "talking points" I've used in letters, e-mails, and phone calls: -Law Enforcement has so many other priorities, making life hard for patients should not be one of them. -The city cannot afford to get sued, especially in this recession. -Shutting down clinics only helps the drug cartels and forest-land illegal growers. -Law enforcement are expected to follow the laws of California, which they are sworn to uphold. Those are just a few points to make. Don't be afraid to stand up for your rights! |

Rep Power: 52260 | Per LadyKnight's request, here's the letter I sent last week to Garcetti and the other 14 CM's. Dear Honorable Councilmember Garcetti, I am a resident of CD-8, an U.S. citizen and a registered voter and wish to bring a serious misuse of taxpayer dollars to your attention. According to a recent Los Angeles Times article from Oct. 8, 2009, there are over 3,100 rape test kits that have to be tested by the LAPD DNA crime lab and there are reports that civilian employees and critical staff may need to be furloughed due to budgetary cut-backs. These rape kits represent 3,100+ victims of violent crimes that remain in fear while their rapists remain at large. With such few financial resources the city and the LAPD have to work with, I'm flabbergasted that the city and LAPD would choose to allocate precious dollars towards raiding medical marijuana dispensaries when this money should have been used instead to tests many of those rape kits. I understand each LAPD raids costs taxpayers approximately $10,000 which begs the question, just how many rape kits could have been tested using this money? It's reprehensible that the city leadership believes that medical marijuana dispensaries pose a greater threat to the community than rapists at large. For that is the message sent; that the city thinks spending money on raids is money well spent rather than using this money to pay for rape kits. Think about it, in the halls of power someone decided that the victims of rape, who surely go to bed each night in fear because their rapists remain at large, come second in priority. With all due respect, sir, someone with a reputation for defending victims of rape and domestic violence, like yourself, should have stepped up to defend these victims of rape and demanded that before a single red cent is wasted on medical marijuana raids, a non-issue to President Barack Obama and the rest of California, those funds should have been routed to pay for as many rape kits as a raid would cost. We're talking about the women and children in our community, Councilmember, the mothers, wives, daughters, and sisters who look to your leadership to provide them with protection. Do you honestly subscribe to the belief that medical marijuana is such a grave danger that it deserves priority over testing rape kits, fingerprints in robberies, etc? How can you do so and look at the women in your community in the eye? Therefore, I urge you to advise the LAPD and the City Attorney and the entire city leadership to not spend a single cent more on raiding medical marijuana dispensaries and route those intended dollars towards paying for the aforementioned rape kits or other forensic tests languishing due to funds to pay for their testing. To this end, I also urge you to reject the latest proposed ordinance, the fourth presented to you for consideration, and enact a more sensible ordinance that allows safe access to patients to their medicinal marijuana and which allows for cash to be tendered in compensation for the donation requested. As you are aware, this is clearly in keeping with the opinion of the Attorney General of California that store front dispensaries that use cash as a means of remuneration is 100% legal so you must make sure this is a requirement of any proposed ordinance. Since some patients rely on edible cannabis for relief and cannot smoke their medicine for whatever reason or simply do not have access to a vaporizer, I urge that you propose that any ordinance allow for edible forms of cannabis. If you pass a ordinance that is fair and compassionate, the LAPD no longer need to raid dispensaries and limited resources would be better allocated to investigating and solving real crimes. Please consider the women who are counting on you to put them first. Thank you for your time and consideration. I respectfully am requesting a response from you in writing or by telephone. Sincerely, GB Last edited by Greenbud; 10-27-2009 at 01:49 PM.. |

Rep Power: 113264 | Okie Dokie folks- I done made my calls and lemme give y'all a few tips! First off, I copied 'n pasted the list of phone numbers onto a word document. Then I copied 'n pasted JOV's awesome script onto the very top o' said document for easy viewing! Secondly, I wanna let y'all know that the folks I spoke with were mighty frustrated! Two of them told me they'd been swamped with calls about this (GREAT JOB FOLKS!), two others told me they didn't want specific comments; they were merely taking "polls." Then two more transferred me to voicemails, which is a polite way of saying we don't give a shit about you. I read the script on their machine anyway! Others were down right RUDE! But don't let rude staffers deter ya! Keep going! The lady from Park's office was especially shitty and tried to distort my words! She attempted to trick me into saying that I was for Trutanich's Ordinance! I ended up repeating my stance for her THREE TIMES! WOW. |

Rep Power: 1891 | Re: Did You Make Those Calls? Send Emails? Thank you to "Just One Voice" who suggested this be posted here. Los Angeles NORML Letter Writing Party @ Bruce Margolin's Office, Sun Nov 1st, 9-11:30 AM This was originally posted in Politics but it was suggested it be posted here, did not see a category for NORML. Hope this is the right place and hope that people will circulate this notice within the community. NORML representatives will be speaking about the 3 raids and arrests by LAPD on collectives yesterday (10/28/09) in the San Fernando Valley as well as the raid by LAPD last week on Craig Rubin's Temple 420. Please attend if you can. Los Angeles NORML Letter Writing Party @ Bruce Margolin's Office, Sun Nov 1st, 9-11:30 AM ---------- NOTE: We are extending an invitation to ALL patient activist groups to attend and participate. We are also asking all activist organizations to please circulate this notice to your members as we need to put our collective thoughts together and come up with a plan. Thank you. ---------- Los Angeles NORML will be hosting a "Letter Writing Party" get together on Sunday morning November 1st at Bruce Margolin's Law office in West Hollywood from 9-11:30 am. We are asking people to give us an hour of their time, that's all. More would be great. The purpose of the meeting will be to discuss the current situation in Los Angeles and also to write letters to Los Angeles city officials about the medical marijuana ordinance that will then be hand delivered to each council members office on Monday Nov 2nd. Also letters will be written to state officials urging support of AB 390, the Ammiano bill. In talks with aides to council members it has become clear that we need to start an old fashioned letter writing campaign. Many aides have told me to "have your people write letters instead of yelling outside". What we are told constantly is that politicians like to look at stacks of letters from constituents and point to them and say "look at all these letters I get about this". Apparently emails and phone calls have a much less effect, they are tallied and quantified but letters are actually read. And the more letters we write the greater our impact will be. This could be groundbreaking, getting all the local activist patients and groups together to plan a unified action. What: Los Angeles NORML Letter Writing Party Date: Sunday November 1, 2009 Time: 9-11:30 Am Where: Law Offices of Bruce Margolin 8749 Holloway West Hollywood, Ca 90069 We look forward to seeing you Sunday Nov 1, 2009. Yes we cannabis! |
